Just saw this on the news. There is nothing on travel warnings on smarttraveller. ANyone have any news/thoughts on this? Could this delay the opening on the new airport (and hence enable me to get access to the QP ;)) Just wondering on the impacts for my trip there at the end of October....

SmartTraveller was updated a few minutes after your post.

In summary:

Travel Advice for Thailand - Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

" In light of the very uncertain political situation and apparent military-led takeover of the Government, we strongly advise Australians to reconsider their need to travel to Thailand until the situation is clarified. Australians in Thailand should exercise extreme caution. You should avoid concentrations of military personnel or military activity.

You should avoid demonstrations and political rallies as they have the potential to turn violent. You should stay indoors, monitor the media, and follow the instructions of the local authorities.

Passengers intending to transit Bangkok airport should check with their airline beforehand.

Staff at the Australian Embassy have been advised to exercise caution and not to send their children to school until the situation on the ground is clarified.

A number of small explosive devices have been detonated at various locations in Bangkok in recent months.

Border regions: There is ongoing fighting and banditry along some sections of the Burma/Thai border. This includes fighting between the military and armed opposition groups as well as clashes between Thai security forces and armed criminal groups, such as drug traffickers. Bandits may target foreigners travelling through national parks or border regions Travellers who have attempted illegal border crossings have been detained and deported from Thailand. "

The end of October is a long time away. The situation may be clarified fully by then. Coup's are interesting things and sometimes have little/no effect on the traveller or the operations of the country. At other times, they are bad news for tourists and the country (eg lockdown of borders, curfews etc). Time will tell which one of these is the case.

Thanks for the update. Guess that what happens when you get up at 5AM Sydney time - before the sleepy heads from the Foreign Office wake up ;)

Yeah I know the end of October is a long way - its one I will be monitoring closely.

Hopefully it will all settle down before my potential visit to BKK in early November. As simongr says, a month is a long time in these situations.

Is it very naughty of me that my first thought was whether the Baht would go low enough to make a DONE4 from BKK a real bargain?

As it happens, the Baht has rebounded, so it's probably not going to happen.

Sounds like a relatively peaceful coup - I hope for the Thais' sake it stays that way.

My daughter and BF staged through Bangkok last night on their way to Narita and reported no probs so far.

Now for the return in a fortnight....

Well I am off to Thailand on Saturday (23rd), and I expect this to have ended by then.

My biggest concern is this causing problems with the changeover of airports.

Part of me is hoping this delays the opening of the new airport by six weeks so I get access to the lounge ;) Mind you cancelling the trip wouldnt break my heart either...

It is easy to get access - fly in business (or first), or fly *A (assuming you have *G status); or re-route; or ...

I am flying business with Thai airways, so the lounge issue doesn't bother me.

But what is of concern is the amount of potential problems that may occur with the change over. Especially given the fact that it is Thailand.
