This has been talked about on and off for a while but the GFC has obviously changed the outlook.

"
12 November 2009 - Scandinavian air travel group SAS AB (STO: SAS) and Finnish flag carrier Finnair Oyj (HEL: FIA1S) have advanced with the plans to form a joint venture, Finnish broadcaster Yle said today, citing knowledgeable sources.
According to Yle, the rumours about such plans have grown stronger this autumn and the companies have now come far in the negotiations.
"It is clear that we in this sector are all the time investigating different cooperation scenarios (...)," Finnair board chairman Christoffer Taxell told Yle when asked to comment on the rumours.
"SAS, like all others, is in contact with different players on the market but we cannot comment on them," SAS spokesman Claus Sonberg said.
A potential cooperation between Finnair and SAS could cover the domestic traffic in Finland and Sweden, but also a merger."
Now if OW were to loose JAL and AY there really would be a lot less choice for RTWs.

Hopefully OW could gain SK instead of losing AY! Not that I really care about SK as they're so cough but more options is always better than less surely, from a consumer's POV. I fly Qantas/BA as much as I can but would like other options to fall back on when neither carrier serves a particular route.

Oh for the days when LX's OW membership was such a sure thing.........:(

Yeah, hopefully Scandie will come our way and increase the options. just a shame the planes and the Flighties are soooo old!
