My "definition of cough service" experience was with AA ground staff. ...
That certainly was "Cr@p service".

I guess I've avoided this type of thing as I rarely have checked bags (generally only with SWMBO in tow) ... other than that I really try get to an airport at least 2½ hours before a flight.

My version of cough service is if they are offensively rude to me. Only really had that once. Otherwise i basically want to get on the plane and not be hassled. Sure give me food offer me more drinks, even try to sell me something. But otherwise let me sit there.

I can even ignore things that others might consider to be cough service depending on my assessment of the intention of the person. I've had things thrown at me twice. One time the FA was jovial, no problems. The other time the FA basically ignored me, might have grunted, and threw the wine bottle in my general direction. Sure it might have been an accident, but I was not real impressed. So I asked him for a second drink when clearing, which he has to get from the galley. I probably didn't even drink it.

Some serious behavioural issues here. I suspect that the selection criteria for FA have probably weakened, esp on budget carriers. Also, the reduction in crew numbers (QF) has an impact - crew run off their feet and, I guess, cranky. I sympathise with them though - apart from a bloody minded heirarcy, the FA have to deal with abuse from all sides, esp those not upgraded, intoxicated, carrying excessive hand baggage, sick and dying ....Maybe it is the penny pinching culture of the airlines that we are seeing.

I see it as an expectation issue as well, but what I really call cough service is when someone gives me worse service than I would give, if I were in their shoes. It comes down to being professional or unprofessional.

Apart from the odd cranky/unhelpful FA, I've had a fairly good run. Worst experience I can recall is from a few years ago when I was flying J to NZ on QF. It was a half empty 737, and I was the only person in Business, which was good and bad - I got plenty of attention from the J FAs, but I really just wanted some rest (it was a night flight).

For quite some time during the flight, a couple of the male FAs were forward of the J cabin somewhere, discussing their respective sex lives. That was the most unprofessional thing I've seen or heard from a FA, and I was genuinely offended.
