Costa Rica travel advice

Has anyone been to Costa Rica? I have a week (7 nights) there after a conference and am debating whether I base myself in SJO and do day trips from there to volcanoes and the rainforest and maybe a night or two at the beach, or if I should travel around. I'll be by myself and will have lots of luggage. Any advice is appreciated.
