Unless the WA premier decides to open up soon so I can do my WA wildflower trip I think I'm going to have to think about other options

I'm thinking about driving to Coober Pedy and then back to Pimba and to Andamooka. As much as I'd like to do the trip from Coober Pedy to Andamooka via William Creek I think I may stick to the main roads.

Any recommendations on places to stay in Coober Pedy and highlights

We really enjoyed Coober Pedy and Andamooka.though a long time since we last went.On both visits we stayed at the Desert Cave hotel which was very nice.I believe a few more options. Unfortunately it seems the fellow we did ours with has retired-a real old time Australian and invited everyone back to his place for a beer at tours end.Definitely go to the Painted desert.
We also did a scenic flight to Lake Eyre as well as landing at William Creek and Oodnadatta.William Creek we landed on the road and taxied up to the hotel.I believe now you have to use a new fangled air strip though.Done through Wrightsair. They were very good.

Andamooka was a scream.A curious collection of misfits, down and outers, spivs and a couple of nut cases.Wouldn't have missed it.

For Opals in Coober Pedy we visited John Dunstan before he became famous.Has a shop now but prices are too high.Mrsdrron knew what she wanted so took cash.Really good deal.

Understand the difference between a solid , a doublet and a triplet.. before you buy…. :)

I can assure that because I'll be the one paying I won't be buying :p

I did a flight over Lake Eyre last year so probably won't do that again but just thought I'd have a mosey around.

Within Coober Pedy, I’ve stayed that the Desert Cave hotel, and the Mud Hut Motel. Both perfectly reasonable. But, we had a much more CB experience on one trip where stayed in the Down to Erth B&B, and that (or something similar) would be my recommendation. The Breakaways are very interesting at sunset.

We drove from CB back towards the Flinders on the Oodnadatta Track. We were in a Land Rover, but the road was in pretty good condition, and a car could probably have done the trip. It is gibber though, so tyre pressure is important. Stayed overnight at William Creek. It was rough but fun. Plenty of nice places in the Flinders.

Thanks. I’ve been to the Flinders several times but would always go back

CB do you mean CP or am I missing something ?

I enjoy the opal towns - have been to ALL of them ! ( even one in Idaho !) The first time to Coober Pedy was the best and Ron is right about Andamooka - full of bat-cough crazies - though things might have changed after they filmed that TV show on opal miners there.

I am in the planning phase for next year.

Are there any updates for the last couple of years?

We will probably fly to ADL and hire a vehicle there.
