200,000 is as you say more than the metered taxis charge but then it is only $20.

DPS Taxi desk now charges 200,000IDR for DPS-Conrad - a ridiculous figure as it turns out. They only seem to use the 'dark blue' taxi's.

The dark blue taxi I got from DPS didn't have a meter and a lot of this variety seem to be this way. I had a fixed price so of course it didn't matter.

However, that was the last dark blue taxi I took whilst in Bali. The light blue versions seem to always have a meter, or at least the ones I peeked into and took always did. The 'real' price DPS-Conrad or any combination thereof, is 80-100K as Wannabeinvestmentbanker suggests, plus 11K for the tollway.

You don't need to get a taxi from the airport taxi rank, you can walk outside and grab one of the light blue ones from the front of the airport.

Thanks to all respondents to this thread - I had a good idea of what I was walking in to and it always makes a difference.

Pretty poor information.

The light blue (Bluebird) meter taxis cannot pick up from the airport. So instead of paying $10.00 (or quite a bit more depending on traffic and tolls) you might pay $20.00.

Big deal!

And it's NOT easy to walk out of the airport to the street to get a metered taxi.

Yes, thats what I said.

Good luck with that. With someone willing and able to hustle and hassle you every 3 steps or so (particularly in the Kuta area) paying more than you should its surely a good idea.

Anyway, I did this trip from the conrad back west at least 8 times, always chose the tollway (which is an option most taxi drivers will give you) and it never came to more than 90-95K + toll even once. Different times of day, different days of the week ... the tollway seems to be generally clear.

This is true - they've got that tied up into a neat little bow. It would be a decent walk from the main exit to crossover the two one-way roads and get out onto the street proper. Having said that, the guy who drove us to the airport to return to PER gave us his card and said he could pick us up next time ... it was a light blue metered cab, so I don't know how that works.

Taxis in Bali are so horrifically expensive and the 'parasite' drivers are just nightmares to deal with - eg. Last night we wanted to go from Double 6 in Seminyak to Barbacao restaurant also in Seminyak - first 'mongrel' quoted me R200,000 - not on your sweet Nellie - R50,000 and walked away - OK OK - so off we go in b2b traffic - 30 mins later we arrive - so to recap 2 adults from Australia who are like gazillionares to these poor people just trying to scratch out a living to feed their families - gave him R10,000 - bear in mind that's about AD10! Yep nothing but scammers and rogues these Bali taxi drivers!

Today we headed to Bali Deli to buy a couple bots champers for NYE morrow night - only Champs they had was Duval Leroy at R950,000 = ~AD100 - taxi there - first 'thief' asked R150,000 - Are you on drugs? R50,00 and no more - OK OK - again 20min drive for AD5 - gave him R100,000 - same on return.

Clearly dudes your dime so spend it how you see fit - but good lord a buck or 2 here and there ain't gonna break the bank! IMHO of course.

So where do I head for my Canonization? ;) :D

You misread my meaning. Paying a fixed fee at the taxi desk when arriving at DPS is so much easier than dealing with the touts or trying to find your way to the street, with luggage in the heat and maybe even rain. Never mind if it's your first visit! The taxi desk might be a bit more expensive, (but it's not that bad) but it can be well worth it.

Taxis in Bali
Meter taxi - Bluebird - the light blue cars - is the way to go. There are now some copies of Bluebird and they are not too bad either in my experience. Always insist on the meter unless you know the fare.

Never bothered with the hassle of a taxi when I arrive at DPS. I always arrange a hotel transfer with the Conrad concierge and even if it costs AUD20 more then that's still just what you'd pay for one of the (free) coughtails in the Suites Lounge every night, if you are a Diamond or staying in the Suites wing.
