I'm considering booking 2 separate tickets both on OW carriers but my concerns are with the close connections.

Eg: LAX-HKG-DXB has only 55 minutes as a connection in HKG and I arrive to DXB at 8:55pm if all is well. However, I have a connecting flight from DXB-CMB-SIN at 10:45pm. If I miss that flight to DXB ill end up missing my connection to SIN. 1 is UL stock and the other is CX stock. If I miss a connection is there any recourse or would end up happening?

55 minutes on separate tickets is crazy.

Not separate. Its deemed legal by CX as connection off LAX-HKG-DXB. Go figure ;)

LAX-HKG-DXB/DXB-CMB-SIN. The separate ticket starts in DXB.

I misread your point. 55 minutes in HKG on the same ticket is fine.

As to recourse should you miss your UL flights, some OW airlines are more accomodating than others.

CX will protect you on the LAX-DXB flights. If you miss the connection in HKG they will put you on the next flight.

I'm not sure how baggage will work - don't know if they can through check LAX-SIN?

If you arrive late into DXB you'll need to refer to UL policy and how flexible your ticket is. UL would not normally be responsible for anything on separate tickets.

Ugh, I was hoping that since they're both in OW at least they could be some what accommodating when delays from one airline forces someone to miss their connection. Guess I shouldn't be expecting much if I miss HKG-DXB and up missing DXB-CMB-SIN.

I think you may have to check with the operating carriers. There are some OW airlines who do have the policies in place if you do misconnect from a separate OW ticket (AA), but I am not sure if that is common place amongst the other carriers.

The problem you will have is that UL won't know you will be late until you are, and by that time their plane has left and the show is over. I am assuming that UL have a low frequency into DXB (could well be wrong here!) so any UL support staff may have already left for the day or for the time being leaving you with no one to talk to.

Indeed. I was considering that I would have to proactively look out for delays. Eg: if there is a delay at LAX which would lead me to misconnect, then maybe I could call UL. Its just that I would prefer not to sit around in DXB doing nothing for 16 hours :(

It would depend if CX has an IATCI agreement (inter airline through checkin) with UL, however they're both in the OW Alliance so you'd hope that was the case. Give CX checkin at LAX your UL oncarriage flights & it's possible you'll be through checked & receive all your boarding passes. That way if CX are late inbound to DXB UL can see what your incarriage flight is.

It's possible even with an IATCI agreement that it may still be too early for you to receive the UL boarding passes but still an exercise worth trying IMHO.

Richh1833 do you have checked luggage or are you doing HLO (hand luggage only)?

Do you have to go via Hkg? Not sure if you paying cash or using points but you can get the Emirates flight from Lax - DXB which is a direct flight and gets into Dubai at 7:30pm.

No issues with connections in Hong Kong then.

If award seats, Emirates usually has pretty good availability on this flight obviously depending when you are flying.

Just a thought to make it a little easier for you :)

I would prefer to check in at least one piece but if that complicates things then I guess I'll just deal HLO that would at least allow me to check in online.

This is a semi-mileage run/holiday.

Having checked baggage shouldn't mean you can't OLCI but I'd try to get the UL boarding passes DXB/CMB/SIN when you checkin with CX at LAX but if it's too early they should still be able to through check your bag all the way. I would then have a go at doing OLCI on the UL website from the CX lounge at LAX or if no luck there try again when you arrive in HKG.
