Connecting to QF9

Hey guys,

Just looking at booking flights AKL-PER.

One of the better options allows me to connect to QF9, just wondering how that works and whether I need to claim the bags and do customs in Melbourne or do it in Perth on arrival?

Or is it just treated as an international transit?

It will be treated as an international transit. International to international.

A good option if you have OneWorld Emerald status (QF Platinum) as you can visit the QF First lounge in MEL.

It can be done if you get provided with BP at AKL or you can do OLCI with printed BP.
It all presupposes that it all goes along as clockwork.
I love wide bodied planes, the first and only 330 leaves AKL quite early, and then there is a long transit in MEL to get QF9 to PER.
If you are happy with the many 737s, then the connection time can be doable.
Would leave it a 2.5 hours between the 2, ideally.
Edit: crooked QF, they when you put in a fare looking for AKL - MEL - PER with QF9 (some dates) at the tail end, provides a 737 dep AKL at 10.00 and arr MEL at 12.15 and QF9 dep at 15.15, so 3 transit only, all the other flights from AKL to PER via Au, go via SYD.
If you don't have QF status, I would go with Nzd$14xx in J if you can afford it, 737 in Y gives me the scares.

Thanks, ended up booking it. Getting QF154 then QF9, customs and baggage in Perth should be nice and quick anyways!

WTAF? "Crooked"? Are you channeling the US President or something? schedules are not built around that particular connection. I actually think that's not a horrible connection.

And fine, you don't like the 737 in Y. Not many do but it provides for schedule flexibility. You yourself point out the 330 early flight, which obviously would be geared for NZ-AU Business passengers and other connections (possibly to the US and Asia) and if that 737 was not there at 10am you'd claim QF were horrible because they didn't provide a timely connection to the flight you'd want. You can't have it both ways.

There are many things to accuse QF of and for many reasons.. but this one is a new twist IMHO!

I would also note in the summer, or at least Feb, there's a lovely connection of QF154, a 332 12:05->14:15 that connects to QF9 at 17:05.

I have a booking on QF9 in May and it's scheduled departure is 1515 ex MEL

yes, that is why I mentioned the summer. The schedule change to the winter (or northern summer) timetable is at the end of March.

Most don't care for them if given choice. I used to book the 767 BNE-SYD whenever I could over the 737.

Severely **OT** here: Used to love the QF and AN (Ansett) 767s!
They were noisy, they could be crowded, but they were big, and spaced out, ...
...and at that time, from when I started to get the flying bug, 1993 onwards, there were more 767s with both, till AN died, now *I think* that both Au major airlines now have less 330s flying domestic than 767s at that time in the then AN and QF days, that is why nowadays we always get an equipment swap from large to sardine.
Watching the old AN (Ansett) Youtube videos still brings a tear to my eyes, those were the good old days.
VA now does provide a service, but they are not comparable to the old AN.

I'd say the old QF 744/743s and AN 744s on the BNE-SYD run back in the day were very useful for connecting in SYD to a QF/partner or AN/partner international flight.

Was sad the day when QF8 ended as it was very useful for connecting in SYD without doing the terminal transfer, but it was bound to happen with DFW eventually going non-stop DFW-SYD when they swapped over to the A380.

Even then every now and again, QF8 occasionally makes the fuel stop in BNE if there are the occasional issues.

Yes so a 3hr ground time at MEL agrees with your proposition that ground time at MEL should ideally be at least 2-2.5 hrs.
So don't understand why its "crooked"?

The Trans-tasman services has always been 737 and then mostly Jetconnect. QF only introduced the 330 into the TransTasman route (specifically the AKL-SYD sector) because EK withdrew its A380 from the tag Trans-tasman flights. Then QF got into bed with Air NZ on some codeshares. The 330 also suits the early morning business traveller flights. The majority of flights in the AKL-SYD and AKL-MEL sectors remain 737. Its actually rare for QF to put a 330 onto the AKL-MEL sector.

If NZ customers wanted to fly to LHR they would actually do:
NZ (AKL-LAX-LHR)
SQ/NZ (AKL-SIN-LHR)
QR (AKL-DOH-LHR)
EK (AKL-DXB-LHR)

Why would a Kiwi passenger do a 2 stop AKL-MEL-PER-LHR?. That route would really only be for a small number of QF centric passengers

Why did QF not sell the QF152 (A330) and QF9 combo?. Perhaps because the ground time would be nearly 9 hours. Most passengers would rather do a 3 hr ground time.

And wake up at 3am to catch a 6am QF152 only to wait 9 hr in MEL for QF9. No thanks even if it’s a 330

Used to love the QF 747 "international" between MEL and SYD and vv meaning you could clear C+I in MEL and just connect in transit in SYDint without the terminal transfer bus mess. Used them a number of times connecting to long haul flights - the 747 short haul ride was a bonus!
