If I fly QF to SIN then connect SIN-KUL, I have a choice of 3K (on either 3K or QF code) or MH for the connection. My questions are as follows:

Which option is best in terms of:

1. QFF SC/points earn
2. Getting boarding pass at SYD/MEL check-in
3. Luggage transfer at SIN - we don't plan to stop, just transit on to the next available flight

And in terms of booking:

1. QF v 3K code (if we choose the 3K flight over MH)
2. Am I better off pricing just QF to SIN and booking SIN-KUL separately, via either MH or 3K website?

You can get 3K boarding pass at transfer desk in SIN and ask them to transfer luggage as well.

Be aware that most connections offered by QF book into a class that does not earn any SC or points. I always book separately and allow a few hours to connect (KUL), if going to a destination that has limited services, you might need different days.

Do you mean the MH connection from SIN-KUL might book into a non-earning fare bucket? 3K (or QF code on 3K) would earn surely?

Actually its more likely to be the 3K connection that does not earn such as this example, if it was a 3K flight number it does not earn regardless of class

  • Points and Status credits are not earned on Qantas codeshare flights (ie flights with a QF flight number) operated by Jetstar or Jetstar Asia other than in Economy classes of B, H, K, L or Y (earn in L class is eligible only when travelling on a oneworld fare product).
  • Points and Status credits are not earned when travelling in the Economy Cabin on flights with a Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K), Valuair (VF) or Jetstar Japan (GK) flight number as part of a Qantas International fare or on Jetstar Asia (3K), Jetstar Japan (GK) and Valuair (VF) when a Jetstar flight voucher has been selected in lieu of Points and Status credit earn.

for a completely seamless experience, BOOK MH! Baggage will be transferred for you. You can get your BP for MH in the lounge in SIN

You only ever earn points/SCs when booking Jetstar flights with their Plus/Max packages, which I believe, although am probably wrong, can only be done on the Jetstar site/call centre.

Transferring in SIN without interlining is no major issue. On a recent SYD-SIN-KUL trip on Scoot (TZ) then Jetstar (3K) it took me under 30min from stepping off the plane to being in the QF lounge. No immigration queues. Baggage up almost immediately. No queues at the Jetstar check-in desks etc. I suspect I would have only saved 10-15min if interlined.

QF are not really interested in you with separate bookings on 3K, but they are quite happy to interline your bags if you fly MH. No questions asked. It's a pathetic joke but true. Most MH fares I've been on btwn SIN and KUL earn SC but you will need to check. You will earn a minuscule amount of miles but the overall QF-MH experience is better than QF-3K

I see. I assumed that booking a JQ/3K/GK flight with a QF number meant that it included the plus pack and luggage since the price on the QF web site is often very close to that base fare, plus pack on luggage when priced on the Jetstar web site.

Sounds like we'll be taking MH then. Will just have to price whether it's cheaper to book all in one ticket through QF or book MH SIN-KUL separately since the plan is to take the direct QF/EK service back KUL-MEL.

Here is an eg.
Adl to Syd on QF earns 800 points under new system. 1000 under old system.
Syd to Mel on JQ35 in Y/J does not earn points or status credits (if booking with the flight above). I made a separate booking on the JQ website, paying $80 more to get points & SC, (domestic pax flying on an international flight)... Dreamline 787, I want to try it out at least once in J, can't wait till QF brings them in.
Mel to Adl earns me 800 under the new system.
Best thing would be to, if you can arrord it, is to fly MH (paying a bit more from SIN to KUL), that is what I would do.
OR go on to the JQ Asia website, and see if you can book a Max fare product.
QF booking onto JQ flight does not earn anything. Lucky I found out early in the booking process.

Addendum: Starter fare, I had a look see, you add SGD$30 to have QFF points & SC added onto the booking, would have to book at the Jetstar Asia website though, if cost cutting is important, and if MH charges through the nose.

Following the above discussion with interest. I have a QF booking Syd-Sin in July, followed by a separate 3K booking Sin-Kul with a 3 and 1/2 hr transit at Sin.

My approach is to checkin online with 3K (does the BP need to be inspected in Sin? Anyone know for sure?), and ask QF in Syd to check my bag all the way to Kul:) If they refuse, then will approach TF desk at Sin as per JohnK's post above. Failing that, I have plenty of time to go landside and retrieve bag, and checkin again...only hassle with this is I believe 3K checkin at Sin is only 2 hours prior to the flight, and I would prefer to spend my time in the QC at Sin then waiting for 3K checkin to open.

Should not be an issue, worse case is going to be a quick visit to the transfer desk.

thanks. Does the 3K online BP need to be sighted by 3K in Sin?

I got burned with this recently. Figured it would earn same as BNE-SYD-BKK. Can't believe that a QF coded flight doesn't earn, sneaky.

You will be OK going to transfer desk in SIN. I have witnessed many people transferring to/from 3K in SIN and having their luggage transferred.

Take note HKG is another place where you are able to use the transfer desk to issue boarding pass and transfer luggage. I have done it with an MH to VS connection obviously on separate tickets.

Singapore Airport Police are psychos about checking and stamping BPs.
I (at the hotel I was staying in), in Singapore, went to the business centre, to print out on A4 paper, that boarding pass thats accepted for a lot of bookings, with AAX, and even SQ.
But when I got to Changi Airport, guess what one of those guards told me, in half broken English, I had to back track to the check in, (this was when there was an early am dep of QFi from SIN to PER), and get one of those cardboardy type of "proper" boarding passes, like what you get at the airport check in counters in Australia.
After I got the cardboardy BP, I backtracked back to Security Check, and then the BPs were duly stamped, SECURITY CHECKED or something.
Of course, the outsourced checkin girl at the gate then tore up the cardboardy BP, keeping the larger part, and giving me back the smaller part, (tail piece).
Things might have changed since 2012 or so, but expect your BP to be checked at all stages.
No fun!
