Most Crédit card insurances don't cover pre-existing medical conditions (at least not without an additional premium).

So unless you are young and healthy you need to tread carefully.

I know this is a FF site but many of us like that other leisure activity of floating around the seas. If you are updating at some stage an additional column of "cruise cover" would be highly appreciated

As I mentioned somewhere else recently The results I get are markedly different.

I am 70+ years old and 10 months ago had open heart surgery. (Aortic valve replacement and 3 bypasses)

Westpac will not cover me whereas CBA take the same stance as the Drs which is that my heart is healthy and they actually know that it is. Conversely most other people are an unknown quantity.

Cover-More/Covermore issues the travel insurance, all claims go through Cover-More.
Zurich is the insurer.

Can you confirm that to be eligible for the AMEX travel Insurance, you not only have to pay with your Amex card (which is to be expected), but you must also purchase the travel through Amex Travel, not through any other travel agent nor direct with the airline or agency?

After searching for an answer I have eventually received confirmation from the provider that Amex Qantas Ultimate does not cover rental car hire excess. Cancelled my booking and used another card which does.

For my last couple of trips, I’ve relied on the credit card insurance (after checking that it satisfied my needs), and then bought a separate basic cover, with a motorcycle add-on pack. Both times about $40.

I have relied on credit card insurance for forty years, but always read the PDS to make sure what is covered and the activation requirement. For example, I always pay the cruise booking deposit with my ANZ platinum card, so am immediately covered if there is a need to cancel for medical reasons. Otherwise I pay for the flights with CC, or prepay hotels.

I always keep the credit card statement for the above payment. Unlike an earlier post, Allianz did want to see the statement showing the qualifying payment. I have needed to claim on credit card insurance four times, the most recent in July 2023 due to a missed flight connection. I was reimbursed for extra hotels and meals, transport, ferries to catch up with the tour group, and for the lost portion of the yacht cruise (letter from TA with breakdown). My whole claim was reimbursed less excess. Claiming was pretty easy and the agent very helpful. There has never been the need to buy another policy as well “just in case”. Credit card insurance is legitimate and does work.

That is not an issue.

You wont find an Australian Travel Insurance cover that doesnt say this anywhere. There is no difference between Retail product and Complimentary CC insurance in this Motorbike license regard and many others.

Its the same Insurance companies, they dont have different underwriting conditions for events. The only different between any policies, is events covered, and how much they pay.

Ditto to all you said. Allianz only asked me for the itinerary and receipts for claim. For the itinerary i gave them flight booking, which shows I paid by points and CC for the charges - but I could have shown them other paperwork. If they truly wanted proof of eligibility they would gave stated clearly so in the first instance.

I believe that is incorrect - they have confirmed for me that paying for the outward flight is sufficient to be eligible.

Thanks for that. I will check as Amex has always covered this for me in the past via my Amex Platinum Charge card.

Amex moved over to Chubb a few years back (in Covid times from memory ) and that is when Car Rental disappeared, certainly from my Amex cards @straitman
I book my flights/ majority of travel with Amex cc, if hiring a car utilise ANZ or Westpac and meet their spend criteria.

Edit: a quick search and it appears Platinum still retains Car Rental.

The Qantas Amex Ultimate uses ANZ/Chubb as their insuring agent as cardmemberservices.anz@chubb responded to my enquiry. It seems to be different to straight Amex cover.

My AMEX Business Card (predecessor of the QBR card) appears not to include Rental Car Insurance excess cover. Which does seem odd.

But the cover triggers with a modest direct spend (doesn’t need to be via AMEX travel).
