Arrived yesterday at a Marriott and so far the experience has been underwhelming to say the least.
I’ve never felt like I wanted to leave a hotel before but this time I’m really just not looking forward to 3 nights of minimal sleep and mold.
Of course, they have full payment on arrival so I feel stuck.
There was only 1 towel (room
Booked for 2) and no bath mat - got that sorted easily enough.
Dreadful noise in the ceiling. They came at 10pm and turned off the ventilation system - told us to leave the window slightly open. He said it’s an old building and to be expected. (Side note, in Scotland and it’s very cold).
Bathroom blind has mold on it.
Building and construction site outside (not previously advised)
The list goes on, but the rest feels petty in comparison.
I don’t have status with Marriott but am not DYKWIA anyway.
On the upside, the breakfast is good and MrMollyJones is enjoying some good gluten free options.
So what is my plan of attack?

Go to the front desk and politely explain the issues with your room and ask to be moved.
Providing the hotel isn’t full then they should do this for you.

No ventilation and mould are health issues.

Photos, lots of very precise close up photos and broad shots. Document everything as it happens, and follow the suggestions above.

You need to give the hotel a chance to make good and move rooms.

If no luck check out. I’ve done that before staying the first night and no charge. But of course you’ll need to be ready to have some ‘vigorous’ discussion.

If no luck check out.
But maybe check the alternatives first
The first task is not to demand a refund or compensation but to secure more acceptable accom.
I would made complaints as soon as it becomes evident. Record your complaints with contemporaneous emails to the hotel. "Tonight I discovered mould in the bathroom and spoke with Mr/s Front of house. I said, h/she said.....yadayadayada

Have you asked to be moved to another room? It's a perfectly normal and valid request.

So they have cleaned the mould in the bathroom for us, and we are keeping the windows open during the day. Enough towels and as it’s the weekend they don’t think there will be construction tomorrow morning.
good enough, but I wouldn’t stay here again.
(I’m so not good at confrontation 😩🤷‍♀️)
