I hope I have the correct forum for this question.

Anyway, I am travelling to Bangkok in June and have two J options I am looking at (ex ADL). The first is MH via KL and the second QF/EK via Sydney. I haven’t flown J in either EK or MH but expect from what I read that EK will be a better option but there are some other things I need to consider in the decision;

1. MH is ex Adelaide therefore less of a pain in the backside with customs and immigration (although no lounge access leaving ADL once immigration is cleared – not really a big deal I guess)
2. QF/EK is $746 (about 25%) more than MH
3. MH option gets me to BKK early evening, whereas QF/EK is 1.10am
4. MH A330 doesn’t have a lie flat seat – not an issue on the way over but definitely an issue on the way back with the overnight flight

As I am flying in June I think my status credit earn is ok and is the same no matter which way I go, but assume some difference in FF points (I haven’t investigated this much except that that EK flight would be on a QF flight number so expect full points earn).

So if you were me would you pay the extra $746? I suppose the real question is more along the lines of whether the difference in quality of the J seats and service makes it worth paying more with more FF points but slightly less convenience

MH is angled lie flat, for the price difference I would just go MH.

I just flew MH. TPE-KUL-MEL. Overnight I got the best sleep I've got in a long time on a plane. The angled lie flat was fine.

+1 for avoiding Sydney. I hate transiting there and avoid at all cost!

Just did a quick search and found both QF and MH offering very good J fare. MH is below $3k!

The 2 flights for QF/EK are 777 and A330 and I think they are angled lie-flat.

Even if they are fully flat beds I will still go with MH unless you want the flexibility of the choice of 2 flights ex BKK with QF/EK.

Thanks for the info. At under $3k MH is great value and customs/immigration in Adelaide is preferable over Sydney so MH it is .... But I will wait to book in case a DSC offer lands in my inbox next week then all bets are off!
