Hi, we have a flight Perth-Sydney domestic via QF, then a flight Sydney to Santiago via QF and then a final flight on Air Canada from Santiago to Buenos Ares. It is ticketed by QF. I can't get a definite answer on these points from airlines:

- Can I check in online and get boarding passes in advance for all 3 legs via QF? QF seem to be indicating it might not be possible for AC leg (though they are not definite). If not, will I be able to check in for AC leg when I get to Perth Airport counter? If not can I check in at Sydney counter? I just cannot get a straight answer on at which stage and how I access my AC boarding pass. Reason I ask is we only have 1.25 hrs in Santiago and I would feel a whole lot better having boarding pass before we get there - can't see how we can meet AC check in times at Santiago itself with so little time if not already sorted out.

- Will bags be checked through to BA and will this happen at Perth or not till Sydney as this first leg is domestic? QF says bags might be checked through from Perth but I am not sure how that happens with what is a domestic flight. As I indicated time will be an issue at Santiago and I am getting worried about smooth transit - hopefully bags will go through to BA and not have to be collected at Santiago.

It is really frustrating not to be able to get clear, non contradictory answers from QF - I don't appreciate being told to check with airport staff at time - surely this is a common scenario?

Are you on Air Canada (AC) or British Airways (BA)?

Assuming you're on QF27 SYD-SCL, AC92 SCL-EZE. When is the flight? The current times are showing QF27 arriving SCL at 1105 and AC92 departing SCL at 1000.

Qantas and Air Canada have an interline agreement. Provided all flights are on the same ticket and PNR, Qantas will check through from PER to EZE. You won't need to collect and recheck at SYD. You'll just have to get the Qantas transfer shuttle from T3 to T1.

You might be able to check in online for the AC flight before you leave.

Directly on AC website? I thought of that but the time might be a problem as you can only check in 24 hrs before and will be outside that due to length of first two flights

Flight is Jan 18, QF27 getting to SCL at11.10am and AC92 leaving at 12.35pm. I thought I would have to collect bags at Syd and lodge them again - will be great if don't have to

Lets take it one step at a time.
Because you are transferring QF dom to QF int at SYD, QF in PER should tag your bags all the way as far as they can, to SCL.
And QF PER should also do the passport swiping for flights up to SCL.
I have done it many times, ADL - SYD/MEL - AKL/CHC/WLG, (NZ), and always have had passport swiping done in ADL.
As for if QF will do anything as a linkage with AC, I can't say, but best of luck.
Just checked, yes, it seems AC does leave SCL at 12.35pm on the 18Jan20, up to a certain time, it leaves at 11 am as mentioned above, before your SYD - SCL QF flight touches down.
One trip ADL - PER onto SIN, I did OLCI for the ADL - PER sector, with BP, but the system at the gate in ADL kept beeping red, till one QF staff member had a thought, ah, you didn't have your passport swiped on our system, have you?
My passport was then swiped on their keyboard, and the light was green.
So even if you do OLCI, for the QF flight, its best to at PER, have your passport swiped.
Edit: on a linked PNR, domestic to international all with QF, your bags "should" be tagged to the final destination, in your case, SCL. **Truly of course, its EZE**.
So no need to pick up your plane hold bags in SYDd T3

If the flights are all on the same ticket and PNR then Qantas is obliged to check your bags through to Buenos Aries from Perth so you would not need to retrieve your bags in either Sydney or Santiago.

Do however be aware that some checkin agents can be a bit lax or unfamiliar with what they are doing so I recommend that you check the baggage tags as they are attached to confirm they show EZE (i.e. Airport Code for Buenos Aries) as your final destination.

With regards boarding passes, they should generally be able to issue all boarding passes in Perth but if the system will not generate the boarding pass for the Air Canada sector you can pick your boarding pass up from the international transfers desk in Santiago which is airside so you don't need to clear customs and immigration.

Enjoy your time in Buenos Aries, it's a great city.

Thanks for the info. I should ask about my return leg, also booked via QF. Lima to LAX via LATAM, then to Syd via QF and then Per via QF. I assume we check in for return on LATAM rather than QF? Will our bags be checked to Per or will we have to collect at LAX and/or Syd?

Correct, you always check in with the operating carrier which will be LATAM in Lima who will check you through to Australia.

You will need to clear Immigration in Sydney as this is your first point of entry into Australia. Then collect your bags and follow signs to "Domestic Transfers" where you will drop of your bags and then take bus transfer to the domestic terminal for your onward flight.

LOL ... reminds me of the time when we had an itinerary of MEL-SYD-SIN-FRA-BHX with a mix of QF/BA/QF/LH. The check-in agent had a bit of trouble finding "Birmingham" and I offered the IATA code. It was only when we were in the SIN lounge that I noticed that our bags were actually checked through to Blenheim, NZ (BHE) rather than BHX although the flight number was the correct BMI codeshare on LH (back in the days when QF would allow such a thing!) - obviously no cross-check back then.

Of course bags made it no problem (apart from one which missed our very short connection at FRA - courtesy of the then QF engineers' industrial action).

As people have posted up-thread, you should be fine getting bags checked through on the one ticket.

Regards,

BD

I was once flying Singapore to Seoul via Tokyo on JAL. Checked in at the SATS premiere check in lounge. I was going to Gimpo (GMP), the agent tagged for ICN. When I pointed out that was the wrong airport, they reprinted with SEL, the Seoul city code. Finally got it tagged corrected SIN-HND-GMP on the 3rd try.
Though I guess 'SEL' was the code for Gimpo before they built Incheon.
