Hi Guys, thanks for all of the usefull info! I am hoping someone can explain fare rules. I am flying BCN-LHR-BKK-LHR-BCN in June. The best qantas can do is the LHR-BKK return on QF1&2. Best price via the UK website is $1590. Yet when I book on ba.com, including the BCN-LHR return legs, best price was $1000. So what I here you ask? Well the BA fare is operated by QF1&2 (BA7311 & 7312) This is very frustrating :? as I wanted to upgrade with points and can't on a BA flight no.

Anyone know why this happens?

Thanks in advance.

Hi jwak and welcome to AFF :D .

Sorry can't answer your question - just wanted to say that Star Alliance carriers allow upgades on one/ anothers flights (using host program points). Don't know about One World, and hence BA/ QF...

Are you sure that the QF fare (the $1590) is in a class that is upgradeable? Note that N, O and Q fare classes are not able to be upgraded.

Fares are based on demand and restrictions. Each airline will have different yield management in place and will have different demand. So it may be that QF has sold out of their low-fare seats and BA has not yet sold out.

Thanks guys for the prompt responses.

NM I wouldn't know how to find the code. Your probably right as it was listed as super saver. Thanks for the help.

On another note, I am moving to Barcelona in March. In Aus I have done 40 QF Syd-Mel-Syd (econ) and a couple of Syd-LHR-Syd (J class) each year. I will be doing 10 BCN-LHR-BCN (econ) and another 10 BCN-AMS-BCN (econ) + 2 BCN-Syd-BCN (J class) each year. My question is should I stay with QFF? If this is the wrong post please let me know.

Thanks again.

It does depend on what you want from a scheme.

If you are looking for redemption values, then I would suggest doing a candy thief challenge and collecting to AA, though it would seem that your plans would be a bit short on getting Executive Platinum though Platinum would be easily maintained and you would earn around 120,000 spendable miles which would be enough for a business r/t from europe to Oz

Collecting to Qantas , you would earn around 125,000 points which would not quite get you an economy class return to Oz ( plus have to pay a *lot* more in "taxes" ) but you would have enough SCs to maintain Platinum

Which do you value more, Emerald status or significantly cheaper awards, but only Sapphire status

FWIW *A member network upgrades (available now/ soon?) on SQ/ OS/ NH/ LH & maybe others are also resticted to qualifying classes (e.g. for NH it's Y or B only). Considering these fare restrictions and the high upgrade redemption "cost", I can't see myself using this option anytime soon.
