CO are running a 737 this Wed and Thurs in DRW, possible proving flights for a perm service GUM-DRW or maybe its just a charter but would make OzFest easier to get to for some :)

Moreover, might see some more Star Alliance in Australia!

Although why DRW-GUM is beyond me....

Why not, CNS-GUM is quite popular with the tourists and is an alternate way for Asian traffic to visit and of course CO hub out of GUM.

I thought CO were having trouble making this route work?

Happy to be told otherwise...

They have been happy with it since the increase in flights 4 years ago, but maybe they feel that DRW will offer less competition for their Japanese traffic compared to JQ in CNS?

Perhaps they will operate GUM-CNS some days and GUM-DRW other days, thus giving a choice for minimal additional costs to them (obviously need ground support etc in DRW).

There is the large petroleum operations based out of Darwin that seem to have a fair bit of US involvement.

Not sure whether there are still some US Marines in town but there was some kind of Naval exercise recently which involoved US Marines on Australian Navy ships and given that there's a US Base in Guam a charter would probably be the quickest way of getting them home.

You can always go for a walk down Mitchell St and see who is drunk at 7PM, thats a good way of working out if there are any US Military personnel in town :)

Just look for the USN Shore Patrol dudes (with the SP armbands) who usually do a lap of the strip giving out their mobile phones to bouncers at the pubs/bars etc to save them the trouble of what to do with a drunken sailor.

Would GUM-CNS-DRW be viable. Or an alternating triangular eg.

2x/wk GUM-CNS-DRW-GUM
2x/wk GUM-DRW-CNS-GUM

Looks like its more to do with the marines than a possible testing flight, the 738s originated from Iwakuni, and a Southern Air 743 was due in at 0300 this morning as well from Iwakuni.

That would explain an all white B747 taking off this morning around 0800 although I thought it was a 100 or 200 series. It had 3 windows upper deck though.

Makes sense.

If that was the actual plane, they've painted over the livery on both the fuselage and tail as it had zero markings on it - well on the left had side anyway, as I saw it taking off on RW11 so I didn't get to glimpse the right hand side.

I think it was the 743 you saw, just from the port side:

The starboard side has a different look with more windows:

I could've sworn at the time it didn't have an extended upper deck, however after looking at the photo I think we have our culprit!

I think it's one of those subliminal messages saying "it's only a classic because it's got three windows".

Somehow only having three windows upstairs seems to camouflage the rest of the upper deck & gives the appearance of being smaller - well that's my excuse anyway.

Just a bit of trivia on the 747-300's. When they first came out some time in the 80's I think SQ called them SUD's for stretched upper deck but QF called them EUD's as SUD also stands for sudden unexplained death. Perhaps just a case of having to be different from SQ!

Like that Jack Thompson ad.....now we can all get some sleep!
