Hi everyone,

First post here. I'm 240 SQ miles away from achieving SQ Gold and I need to do it by the 30th of June. I know that I can't accrue points just flying VA domestically in Australia.

So the next best I guess is to fly trans-tasman. I'm looking at Melbourne to Auckland flights but there are none available on the SQ site.

Sorry if this is a very basic or stupid question

This is my first time doing this codeshare thing. So do i sign up for AIRNZ rewards and book my Melb-AKL flight on the airnz website and pray to God that SQ recognises that I flew that flight or how am I meant to accrue the miles otherwise?

MAny thanks in Advance.

Hi, welcome to AFF. Hope you hang around to learn a lot.

My first port of call would be to speak to Singapore Airlines Krisflyer membership services, to see if they will comp you the 240 miles to achieve gold. If you were retaining gold, I have read they might be willing to do this, but if achieving for first time, they may not. Worth a try though.

Second preference: go for the SQ Melbourne - Wellington flights. Any fare you pay on the SQ website with dollars on this sector will earn you enough to get your 240 miles.

Last resort: Flying Air NZ, like you suggest. This is complicated, and could get very expensive, as many of the lower fare categories don't earn Krisflyer miles. You book on AirNZ website, and enter your Krisflyer number, but the fares that earn miles are expensive. I saw one for $372 one way MEL-AKL- did not earn, but $510 - did earn. To find out if it earns, pick a flight and at the top of the screen (on a computer browser anyway) , you will see half way across the screen something that says "Seat" with a letter in brackets beside it, eg. Seat(T). That letter must be A, E, O, U, B, H, M, Q, or Y to earn Krisflyer miles.

Another alternative to this would be buy cheapest fare (on any carrier) to NZ, take a domestic flight of at least 240 miles on Air NZ (ie. WLG-AKL or CHC-AKL) , and cheapest return from the other city. The domestic flight should be purchased on NZ website, and that letter in brackets beside the word seat should be one of the letters I've listed above or V.

Did I mention it was complicated?

Thanks so much for your reply. I've had a suggestion that I can also earn valid SQ miles if I book VA flights domestically. Is this true? This may work out better.

I agree the Wellington flight is probably the safest way to make sure I get the points.

I may do a round trip of Mel-WEllington-AKL-Mel over the weekend if the VA thing is a no go

Any thoughts?

cheers again :)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

You can earn miles on VA domestic flights, but not "elite miles", i.e. the miles you earn will add to you KF miles balance (so can be used for award flights), but will not contribute anything to earning status.

So you might take a flight MEL-SYD and earn 440 miles, but they won't count towards the 240 miles you need to achieve gold.

Understood. Its melbourne to wellington then :)

Thanks again
