Looking at rewards flights MEL - GLT and am a bit confused by the points cost:

Why is the second option below 20k/46k + $106, whilst the other options (which seem correct for Zone 2) are only 12k/27.6k points + $135 ?

There are two differences. A) the BNE-GLT flight is the next day and B) it is a different QantasLink operator. I doubt B is the culprit.

Why would Qantas charge more because the connecting flight is the next morning? The BNE stop for one of the cheaper options is 8h:15m, the more expensive is 11h:5m.
All BNE - GLT flights are economy.
So I wait three hours longer, pay for a hotel, and get stung extra points? What am I missing?

You are being charged for two flights as domestic flights all need to depart on the same day

OK, makes sense, in a weird way, given I didn't request a different day..
However, if you book two reward flights separately,
MEL-BNE in Biz: 27.6k + $42 and BNE-GLT in Economy: 8k + $64 = 35.6k + $106
MEL-BNE in Economy: 12k + $42 and BNE-GLT in Economy: 8k + $64 = 20k + $106
so the 20k + $106 adds up, but the 46k + $106 doesn't add up.

From memory in this situation if you click on the 46k J overnight trip flight (which is quoted as J+J but is clearly a J+Y trip), you will find out one or two page later that the QFF point cost is readjusted to 35.6k (I think you get a "good news" banner message)

I've seen this before where I book between ARM and MEL and the mixed-class overnight option has a higher points redemption (36.8K) than the total of the two individual rewards or the same day option (27.6K) . When I continue with the 36.8K booking it comes up with "hey, we found a cheaper rewards option!" and it changes to 27.6K and that is what is deducted.

Select the 46K option and go through with the next step in the booking to see if that happens for you too.

I suspect because the QFLink flights don't have J class that it calculates as if it does for display (i.e. J+J) and then readjusts when the reward points for the booking is actually validated (i.e. J+Y).

Thanks. I'll give it a try.
Qantas IT, just keeps on giving.
