I have booked flights syd-Tokyo in JAL with Qantas points as soon as they were available . I am finding the taxes on the journey Tokyo to sydney are much more expensive ie $600 vs 100 compared with the ticket being booked as a return out of Australia . I wanted to book the outgoing tickets the day they were available so they were one way. Is this usual? Any way to minimize charges? Thanks

Yeah, this is the same for JAL (and ANA for that matter) cash fares. They're charging much higher fuel surcharges for itineraries originating Japan. All my friends in Japan are complaining about it too.
I was hoping I was just doing something strange and it was not really the case. Oh well!
