Ive managed to book 2 tickets to Rome, Business class reward redemption.

Ticket 1: SYD - HK - Rome ($750 aud + 179k points)
Ticket 2: BKK - Rome ($40aud + 110k points)

Yes i need to get a ticket from SYD - BKK but does anyone else find the fees out of sydney exorbitant? I nearly feel like cancelling the sydney leg and booking 2 tickets out of BKK with the SYD - BKK Leg on business or ecomony reward (about 1-200 one way) which still saves 500 in fees out of sydney.

Is there something im missing?

The money part of the reward flight tends to be more directly related to the airline that is operating the flight and the distance/duration of the flight rather than the specific airport of departure. Of course the big exception to that statement is for premium cabin departures from the UK due to the UK government imposed air passenger duty.

Emirates now have about the highest carrier charges for reward bookings.

Which airlines are operating the flights noted in your post?

Sorry the first one is Cathay and the second one is Finnair..
