I have a some costs incurred due to cancelled and rescheduled flights and am wondering how much it matters about the reasons given by the airline.

There are the automatic emails issued which just say words to the effect 'your flight is cancelled, here's the new one' although when corresponding with the airlines they give reasons like 'late arrival of incoming aircraft' or 'overbooking situation' (although of course no choice re whether to stay on the flight or not, we just got moved to a different flight).

Will travel insurance cover the costs of extra meals/accommodation in those circumstances or is it only limited to strikes and weather etc?

I would imagine you would have to peruse the actual policy as they may vary considerably between policies
