Simple, $34k overseas spend gives you enough miles for a one-way suite ticket to Europe. 3% is a fee of about $1000, the ticket costs $10000. So for the price of an Economy ticket, you get a Suite ticket.

Of course it is everone's own decision if SQ suites are better than Economy or not. There is always a trade-off.
As we all know, SQ is famous for their very attractive flight attendants, but this is not the case in suite class. On my last suite class flight I had three rather unattractive male flight attendants...! :)

I like that !

Would be happy to modify my stance from now on

Thanks for that example

I recalculated your example:

1) SYD CDG return in suite is about $12,000

2) Suite Saver is about 90K in points (per Cove et al)

3) 1.33 KF per $ spend

4) You need to spend ~$67,670 to get 90K in points

5) For that, the currency conversion fee at 3% would be $2,030

OMG

Your conclusion is spot on despite the incorrect ticket price.

I am truly converted now.

Hope that calculation helps another doubter !

Now if there is a spare Suite or two try one for eating, drinking and movies and have the other Suite made for sleeping. That is better than a private jet!
The ticket redemption cost goes on Citi Select.
I think you will have plenty of legroom.

Errr, for domestic spend you earn 1.33 miles per dollar and don't have to pay 3% conversion fee. For overseas soend you earn 3.33 miles per dollar. There are a few other mistakes in your calculation. I guess my late night math is better than your Monday morning math :)

I stand corrected

An even better outcome at 3.33 KF per $ spend!

Only need to spend ~$27,000 to get 90,000 KF points (= 1 suite)

A more genuine convert by now

I just popped my Select card into my pocket with the 28-degrees in 'reserve'

Thanks AFF

Yes, they did that for me too on every flight so far. Now you only need to tell me how I can get to Europe in a suite for only 90k miles...

FWIW, I am in shorts & thongs in Saigon (SGN) right now sipping coffee so it's a bit loose in the head.

Can't insert a smiley with my iPhone !

Exp1k please note we can only go Suites from SIN-LHR as we run out of Perth so that is why the Suites points are so modest.

I see, but I wouldn't call that modest. For only 22k points extra, you get a suite from Sydney to Singapore as well.

Perth is pretty remote but it is closer to London so I am not complaining.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but rather enjoyable reading. Just wondering....

The 5pts/$, has anyone NOT had this bonus credited when spending over seas? as it states "eligible" purchase. What is a non-eligible purchase? or they talking about cash advance etc etc.

Never tried a cash advance but EVERYTHING else I have put on my card either overseas or via online overseas websites has earned 5pts/$. It is now the only card I use when out of the country.

As an example, recently booked a modest cruise in Mediterranean, approx AUD13k. Could have booked it in Aus, but found a way of booking the exact same thing via a NZ website. Bingo! 65000 pts!

LOL nice..... maybe the car dealers in the states can let me buy one on the card :)

Always had it credited. If you read the T&Cs, I suspect you'll find a definition of "Eligible Purchase", which will be the same for local and overseas transactions / points. It's purpose will be to disallow point earn on cash advances, "government charges", annual fees, and the like.

Clever man !

Well done

Thinking outside the 'card'

Is that via an NZ website in NZD, i.e. you did have a foreign exchange cost for those 65000 pts?

Unfortunately yes and yes. But still worth it IMO. Calculations have been done earlier in this thread. It all comes down to how you value your points, as always.

But there's food for thought; can we find an overseas website that will bill in AUD..?

was going to say hotelclub for AUD on OS transaction but not really.......

Just did my first transfer of points from Citibank to Virgin (at least I hope so). What an absolutely hopeless website. There is no way to actually select the airline you want to transfer the points to, so I hope I did the right thing by putting the airline code in front of my Velocity Number. Then they say it will take 3 weeks to transfer the points.

In this day and age of electronic systems

1) Someone should be working with Citibank to make their system usable by their clients.
2) With b2b systems we should be talking minutes not weeks to transfer, particularly with all the clumsy security you need to go through to get to your accounts.
3) Citibank Board Directors need to understand reputational risk from poor and antiquated customer facing systems
