Churning and Travel Insurance

I have booked some os travel with a credit card to access the credit card travel insurance. However, I also want to cancel that card before the trip so I can apply for another. Does my insurance still stand on the burnt card?

I think most would require an active card.

Bankwest says--
"You, your spouse and dependent children may get complimentary cover – as long as you’re travelling overseas together and have an open and activated eligible credit card".
