I've been following this story for a few days via an NHK World: Japan podcast.

So far, China haven't done anything to American & Japanese aircraft who have flown through the zone apart from watching but it could get ugly.

Well, we all know what can happen when a foreign power with an itchy trigger finger is not 100% sure that you are in-fact a passenger airliner...

If I was on a passenger airliner, I'd want to give the area a wide berth.

As an aside, on several trips to Shanghai and Beijing from SYD this year, I noticed the flight path was north towards HKG before flights followed the coast eastwards, then north towards Shanghai. I had believed that Taiwan has restrictions on PRC civilian aircraft entering it's airspace.
