An increase from 55 to 71 flights a week is probably worthy of its own thread rather than lumping it here, having said that I welcome the option of a day flight to/from BNE. The Novotel at CAN is a great option for the night before as well.

Food is more than adequate in taste and quantity and although I do rate other Chinese carriers higher they are still ok. There is usually a western option available and whilst the wine list isn’t extensive they do have your normal compliment of spirits and a couple of beer options.

Actually, I still chuckle to myself of a story a former work colleague from NL who was shunted to CZ flying into Oz from AMS. After take off, he asked for a bourbon/whiskey (being an American expat) and the FA saying they didn’t have it but they have Beer and Wine. So he thought, guess I’ll have wine and asked what wines do they have? She said “We have a white wine and a red wine”… Hopefully they’ve improved.

This is a trip report about China Southern Airlines (CZ) in Business Class.

The route is MEL-xCAN-KMG return. That’s Melbourne-Guangzhou-Kunming. All in Business Class.

MEL-CAN is a B787. CAN-KMG varies - for me it was a B737 or an A320.

Ticket cost was approximately $2,800 when booked directly on China Southern’s website. The cost was charged in AUD and billed in Australia.

CZ is not a member of any major alliance. They have FF arrangements with several airlines including AA and BA. Their own FF scheme is called Sky Pearl Club.

It’s my first time flying CZ.

The flight left Darwin way early and does not connect with Qantas services. Should it become a morning departure ex-CAN I believe and add Qantas Codeshare this could be attractive.

Somehow I think the timings of the flight are to optimise connections at CAN. So a 2150 departure from CAN and 1225 arrival back there almost certainly provides feed from all across China.

And anyone know if free hotel will be extended beyond 31 Dec?

CZ have been quietly winding back the fare classes that are eligible for the transit hotel stay. On airport the Novotel and Pullman are very nice, with the Novotel usually circa $100 a night. While they have a shuttle bus it’s sometimes quicker to grab the terminal transit to the domestic and walk across.

Off airport the Holiday Inn is nice, Mecure and Hilton Garden Inn newer, all around $60 a night,

Try requesting the transit hotel on the website - it's buggy, but does ultimately work. If you can get a confirmation, you should be good to go. Note that if travelling alone in economy, your room is subject to sharing with a stranger unless you pay a supplement. The hotel itself is quite nice but guests continue to smoke indoors - don't bother if you're sensitive to smoke.
