So, the visa-free travel for Aussies is currently due to expire on 31 December 2026.

Assuming this isn't extended again, does anyone know if I would be able to enter China in late December, and stay (for a total duration under 30 days) until early January?
Yes, assuming it works the same way as regular tourist visas used to work.

You just had to enter by the last day of the visa, and were granted entry for the full duration.

If visa-free entry grants 30 days, that’s what you’ll be given on entry, ie, entry date and rules at entry date are the all important decider.

Someone asked a similar question on reddit and the official response confirms the above.

Yes, this should generally be possible, provided you enter on or before 31 December 2026 and your total stay does not exceed 30 days.

📅 How the timing works

The key distinction is between the policy expiry date(when you can enter) and the duration of stay (how long you can remain after entering).

  • Entry Deadline: Australian passport holders can enter China visa-free as long as they arrive on or before 31 December 2026.
  • Stay Duration: Once admitted, you are typically allowed to stay for up to 30 days, counted from the day after your arrival. So, entering in late December and departing in early January would fall well within this limit.

💡 A few practical points

  • Policy Extension Risk: This assumes the policy is not extended. If it is extended (which has happened before), your entry in late December would still be fine, but you'd simply have more flexibility.
  • Passport Validity: Ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your intended stay.
  • Proof of Onward Travel: It is generally advisable to have a confirmed return or onward ticket showing you will leave within the 30-day window, just in case it is requested at check-in or upon arrival.
It's always wise to double-check with your airline or the Chinese Embassy closer to your travel date, as policies can shift.

There ya go - the Skynet thingy which is never wrong gives a green light 👍
