Hi, my daughter is on a school trip to Japan next month. I want to ensure that we get the points from the trip. The Melb-Tokyo trip is on Singapore Airlines, there is also a domestic leg on Virgin (then the same coming back). All in economy. I have a couple of questions, that I though someone might know the answer to.

1. How many points will she get claiming on Singapore (and obviously Virgin on the domestic legs)? How many points would she get, if we alternatively put down her Velocity number?

2. I don't want to stress the school by insisting on any ff numbers on bookings (so I will have to claim the points retrospectively). What info will I need? (from memory it was boarding passes, wasn't it?)

Thanks everyone.

Will they be fares that earn points? I'll bet that the school has booked a group fare that is extremely cheap. Knowing these type of fares very few of them actually earn.

Still, it's always worthwhile trying. Get the PNR as well as the BPs. Get your daughter to take a photo of the BPs when she receives them and to send them to you ASAP.This means if she loses them then you're not stressing about claiming later with no proof.

Finally I hope she enjoys Japan, am here now and having a great time.

My starting point would be to simply ask the school if the flights are eligible for points. Perhaps a deal has been done that precludes points earning & you might be saving your time.

A good point but I suggest you don't rely on their response. I doubt they'd know definitively unless someone there really knows their stuff, like us. :)

Thanks for the info (I wasn't aware that there are fares that don't earn points).

Assuming that the school booked the fares normally (it is only a small group of 12 plus 2 adults) - would I be best to put down her Krisflyer number or her Velocity number? She currently has 500 krisflyer points (which I could push some Krisflyer Spree spending to get to the 5000 point mark to transfer to Velocity).

Does anyone know how many points a return Y Melb- Tokyo Singapore flight generates via Krisflyer points? Velocity points? (then I can work out which is best)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

When I was in high school I went on a school trip to Vietnam. We were told that the fares would not earn frequent flyer points.

Regardless, I asked them to add my frequent flyer number at check-in before each flight (9 in total; some with Virgin and most with Vietnam Airlines). I received points for every single flight.

(I expect claiming missing points afterwards would have achieved the same outcome - if you decide to do this make sure you keep the boarding passes.)
