Hi,
We are travelling Brisbane - KL - KL Paris on Malaysian Airline with our 13 month old grandaughter next month. The Malaysian Airlines website has no mention of a baby seat or car seat available, only bassinets.

Has anyone flown with Malaysian Airlines using a baby seat? What are Malaysian Airlines legal responsibilites for a child of that age?

I searched previous posts, but they were from a few years back, and did not mention Malaysian Airlines.

Thanks.

You would need to ring and ask what capacity they have for taking seats on board, you would need to provide one while the airline provides the anchor point, otherwise a bassinet and lap belt is the order of the day.

Thanks Markis10. Looks like we have to take our own seat. Appreciate the prompt reply.

You might want to check what secure points they have, if they have them they will be on specific seats, otherwise there is no point in taking them.

Thank you to all for the responses. That is exactly what we are after. I feel much happier now flying with our grandaughter.

I don't get this obsession with flying a child in a car seat. What is the point? A car seat is designed to protect a child in a car accident, which are very different to aircraft accidents in terms of incidence and severity.

It's not as much about safety as it is about familiarity and control. When we first took our daughter to the UK at age 2 we were not looking forward to the journey, but by using her own car seat we were easily able to apply the usual rules (no seatbelt - no fly) and she was at the perfect height to watch cartoons on rotation. The only downside was that the tray table couldn't be used but as kids meals come early we were able to juggle feeding time. She was also comfortable sleeping in that position so all-in-all I would recommend it for toddlers.

Deno, just so you know too, we've used the CARES harness on malaysian, along with emirates, qantas, singapore and VA. I did carry a photocopy of the FAA approval and the bit off each website that mentions they are OK but i've never needed it. I'm assuming you have a seat booked for them if you are talking car seats??? A bassinet should still be ok for a 13 month old (each airline has different weight restriction) and will take a lot of the pressure off parents, make sure you try and get a bassinet row seat. The CARES harness was great as it kind of emulates a car seat anyway but only has limited use, you can slide out from underneath if you're tricky and our daughter was able to get out of it by 2 and a half. It actually became easier to just use the lap belt as that was what everyone else was doing on the plane. But for that 18 months or so I wouldn't have flown without it.
