So if I fly on four separate bookings:

1. QF MEL-SYD
2. FJ SYD-NAN
3. FJ NAN-LAX
4. AA LAX-LAS

Will the QF counter at MEL be able to check me all the way through in terms of boarding passes and luggage?

Equally on the return if I check to an AA flight somewhere in the US that gets me back to LAX for LAX-NAN and NAN-MEL, again on FJ on separate bookings, will I be safe?

Ideally they *should* considering they're either a partially owned QF airline or a Oneworld airline, might be worth checking with QF though to be sure to avoid disappointment.

However saying this a few weekends ago I flew MEL-SYD QF Y and then SYD-AKL LAN J on seperate tickets. At Mel international connections desk they gave me boarding pass for MEL-SYD, tried looking up my LAN ticket but then just said "Please see the LAN checkin desk in Sydney".
There was an issue with LAN upgrading its ticketing and checkin systems for the whole weekend so hopefully it was just because of this and not because they wouldn't do it.

Would be interested to hear if anyone else has been successful in this.

This may or may not be related to your situation (just putting it out there) but I'm in the middle of a 5 segment AA itinerary (same PNR) and they could only check luggage for a maximum of 3 segments. After the 3rd I had to collect my bag, re-check and clear security again. I was able to get the 5 BPs at the first port.

I don't know if it is isolated to AA or OW or applies to all airlines.

OK. On the way back (5 segment AA PNR) and the agent at the first port could tag my bag for 4 segments. Hmmm....

The answer is yes and no........

If they can find your other bookings in the system and link them, then YES

If they cannot or they will not link (computer glitch) then you will have to claim bags and recheck.

It would be up to the airline (not what Alliance they belong to) as it depends on the system limitations & capabilities of the GDS used.

I know the GA system was only capable of 3 flights on a thermal tag so if you were flying xx_/xDPS/xSIN/xAMS/ABZ you would have to get your bags in DPS & recheck or get them in AMS & recheck.

The most flights I've heard you can do on QF is 6 which was BNE QF x/SYD QF x/EZE LA x/SCL LA x/LIM AV x/BOG AV MDE!

These flights were booked in the same pnr however it still depends on the airline doing checkin for the first flight & if they have a baggage agreement with those other airlines.

It still may be possible to get bags through checked if some flights are in separate pnrs but again it's up to the accepting airline eg QF will only through check in this instance for One World airlines only.
