This is in the news today.

Ring of LAX baggage handlers caught in one of the largest property heists in airport history, say police

Sad reality of life really.

I'd have thought it only happens in a 3rd world country, not in the good old USA.

Where are the CCTVs when you need them ?

This is why all unmissable items are in my carry on.

Touch wood, I have not been unlucky.

Have you got unlucky ?

Further, I use the single-use numbered tags on my checked in so I would know if they had been tampered with.

What's your preference ?

EDIT: saw Rooflyer's thread after my post. Could this be merged please ?

I am unsurprised - had a cameral lifted from my bag in 2012 at LAX. I was dumbfounded that it was possible for security to be so bad behind the scenes to enable that to occur - certainly made the passenger screening excesses seem pointless.

Re: Baggage handlers arrested at LAX

The only place we have had luggage stolen as well. But then the bag with missing items had a TSA note in it so not necessarily the baggage handlers.

I am glad my care package to ex-pats wasn't tampered with, BBQ shapes, Vegemite, Allen's Snakes, Weet-bix and other culinary treats survived.

I am not surprised though. Seems the DPS airport hasn't got cameras fitted yet and a lot of bags are being opened.

I am surprised it doesn't happen more - I mean there are plenty of places where bags go where there is no security. It doesn't take much to take things out of bags - it is a case of where to hide them to get them out to your vehicle after your shift ends.

The pricy items are a given - the cost of those to replace are high, and if it is something you need on that trip, it is annoying. But even some of the items that don't seem important - like a pair of leather gloves. OK they might only cost $30, but if you had them for years, they fit you perfectly, you knew you were going to use them on the trip - sometimes those types of items are just as frustrating

But as it is always, it is a joke that passengers go through all the security, do the right thing in the name of safety and yet someone can steal your private property because they are allowed to unlock your bag.
