Checked in but no boarding pass issued and instructed to see airport staff

Thursday night I checked in to a Friday afternoon SYD-BNE sector online.

I then received the message: “You're checked in, but... Please see one of our Qantas team members at the airport and we can assist you further." No boarding pass was issued.

Some Internet searching suggested that similar things had happened to other people and they had either been given an upgrade, or were being checked to see if they could sit in an exit row. I thought neither of those things could be relevant because I was already flying in J, on a revenue ticket. So I called QANTAS - and the call centre could not explain the message.

The reason for it turned out to be quite interesting. Storms in Brisbane late Thursday afternoon had resulted in many flights into Brisbane being cancelled. That disrupted many passengers and also pilots. So, QANTAS decided I might be downgraded to Y to allow for critical staff repositioning (and to let them fly J). Fair enough! Pilots are rather important if we are to fly.

Posting so that anyone else who receives and then googles the same message in future can see this potential explanation.
