Hi

This is my first post on this forum.

I am traveling from Canberra to Dubai via Melbourne. Canberra to Melbourne(Domestic) flight is operated by Virgin and Melbourne to Dubai(International) is operated by Emirates. It is a single Ticket for both flights, issued by Emirates. Up till now I was thinking that I will get my Checked baggage back in Melbourne and I will re check it again in Melbourne. I have a 5 hour stay in Melbourne. But I just came to know that I might not get it in Melbourne and it will be checked through to Dubai. I actually need my Baggage back in Melbourne. I am happy to recheck it again at Melbourne. I know if it were 2 separate tickets, there wont be a problem.

My question is: Will they give me an option at Canberra Airport to check my luggage only up to Melbourne and not all the way to Dubai?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to AFF Dave!

Yes, ask them to short check it to Melbourne only and state that you will recheck it yourself in Melb.

It should not be a problem.

Even if the bag is tagged through, you will have to pick it up in MEL anyway. So no real need to ask for the bag to be short tagged.

Huh? The luggage inbound from CBR will be transferred directly to international at MEL without being short checked.

It is different going the other way (International->Domestic)

Sorry, read it the wrong way around!

I have done a similar itinerary through MEL (but all on QF) and the bag tag just said MEL when i asked it to be short checked. Then i just had to re-check prior to next leg.

Thanks all for replies. I am traveling on Tuesday and will request airline officials to only check my bag upto melbourne.
