Hi all ,
Doing a JASA status run tomorrow MEL - SYD - ASP - SYD - MEL .
Do not have any luggage obviously . Have not used Q card reader before , so is 30 - 40 minutes before the time of the flight plenty of time
to scan ? On an early flight so wont have much need for the J lounge .
Also , will that check me in for the rest of the days flights as well ?

Thanks ,

Paul

Paul,

On the first question:

Domestic Check-in Times | Qantas

Flight NumberRecommended Check-inLatest Check-in with Bags
Domestic (QF400 and above) with checked baggage.45 minutes30 minutes
Domestic check-in for Qantas codeshare services operated by Jetstar (QF5000-QF5999). 60 minutes30 minutes

Boarding commences 20 minutes before departure for all Qantas flights.

On using the Q Card reader to check in for all the day's flights, my understanding is that the reader only checks you in for the next flight and in your case it would be best to visit a check-in kiosk to check in for all flights that day from there.

HOWEVER - the understanding I have (after speaking with QF Reservations) seems to be in conflict with the NGCI FAQ's for the Q Card reader, which state:

6. Can I through check for onward domestic flights?
You can also use the Q Card Reader to check-in if you have onward destinations in your booking.

Personally, I'd just check in online. Then scan your QFF card at the gate. Unless you want to use the reader to say you've done it.

That would be my suggestion too so when you arrive at the airport you can just walk in the doors & head straight through to security then the QP or the boarding gate.

If you're feeling really adventurous you could be an AFF guinea pig & use the Qcard reader & tell us what happens however if you do I would make contact with a QF staff member eg the gate agent (before they close the flight at minus 15) & ask them "what flights am I checked in for"? That way if you're only checked in for the first flight they can check you in for the rest of the journey.

Quite a few people get caught out sometimes thinking they're checked in & they're not so they may go to board the flight & get a beep at the gate. If it's outside 15 mins before your ETD the gate agent can check you in however if it's inside 15 minutes they will probably have finalised the flight ie cancelled you off because you're a noshow but in most cases you can be reinstated on that flight.

I used Passbook the other day just to say I'd done it, and it works really well :)

But I'd also echo simply checking-in online, should be able to get all 4 flights in one go, and select preferred seats ;)

I just looked at the above (Platinum) video & I think it's time for an update where they could actually use a live automatic bag drop rather than a cardboard cut out. As the scanner for the RFID chip is underneath the rubber mat where you place your bag I find I have a better success rate placing my suitcase flat as the Qtag has more surface area to scan rather than being sideon as depicted in the video.

It would be a good idea to tell the pax the domestic allowance eg "as a Platinum ff you're entitled to two bags up to 32 kgs each". They could also show people how to attach the heavy tag that will automatically print out if the bag weighs 24-32 kilos.

As it's not a live bag drop in the video it doesn't show the Qtag bag receipt being dispensed out of the machine which would be a good idea. Also if they showed the prompts you really get if would be more helpful as opposed to the actor simply saying "just follow the simple prompts".

They should also reiterate that when using the QCR to checkin, when you board you scan your ff card not your mobile phone, as a lot of people get confused thinking when you are sent an sms confirming checkin that you're meant to scan your mobile at the gate reader. The only time you scan your mobile if when you've done mobile checkin & have the 2D barcode on your phone.

I've checked in with Q card reader for a red-eye to MEL from PER connecting to an early morning flight to SYD, on the same PNR and it checked me in for both flights, I received two SMS messages, one for each flight.

Thanks Winchester ,
i think the best thing to do will be is give myself plenty of time in the morning..... go for the Q card reader first
Plan B - use the kiosk and go have a good coffee in the J Lounge .
I do hope the SYD - ASP - SYD does have the updated J .
This will get me within 200 s/c of WP in under 8 weeks into my new year with QF !!!

Paul.

All good advice - will be the guinea pig and report back tomorrow night ,

Paul

So the Q card reader would only let check in for 2 flights ahead , could not comprehend 4 flights in 1 day ( sometimes i cant )
but was easy to get the other 2 done in the J lounge on the way through .
Any suggestions on obtaining exactly 200 more s/c .
the MEL - SYD - ASP -SYD - MEL on a JASA is 240 and cant be beaten for better value from what i can see ??

From my reading of all the comments here, it is one of the best status credit runs from Melbourne. Am doing the same as you next month - first JASA status credit run :)
