Looking at Qantas and it's pretty expensive to get to EZE from SYD.

I think there are two ways to get a cheap flight to EZE

1. Get to Auckland on a cheap Jetstar flight, then to EZE on LAN or a similar airline
2. Go frequent flyer to LAX then find a cheap flight from there into EZE

How come the flights are so expensive into South America? Does anyone have any tips or tricks on getting to Argentina for less than $2k!?

depending on when you want to go LA is AUD2009 via SCL

or you can take scAerolineas Argentinas for AUD1509

...and there are very good reasons for the significant price differential

I thought i saw somwhere recently that both Aerolineas Argentinas and LAN were offering cheap flights to South America, around $1200 or so???

as always depends when u are flying...

You could think about a different flight plan, eg via the US and then a flight to BA. That may open up more opportunities for a cheap flight rather than a flight through AUK plus you could spend some time in the States if you wanted to. The total flight time would be similar to that of flying SYD / AUK / SCL / EZE

If you fly into EZE you will pay the $100 repricosity fee, however at this stage, if you enter Argentina via land, then no fee is charged. I understand that this loophole will be closed in the future.

Thanks for your help everyone!

Looks like the timing of my question was a bit serendipitous as Qantas just released $1500 return fares from SYD -> EZE (via Santiago) for travel between May and July!

Then you must be flying on Lan if its via Santiago? I know Aerolineas had fares return for around $700 last week. But of course it could take you a week to get to EZE:D

Whaaaaaaa?

Anyway, what about via South Africa?

And what is this scAerolineas business (I am not here enough to be down with the in jokes sorry)

You would get what you pay for if ever you chose to fly Aerolineas Argentinas.

They would have to be the very worst airline we have ever flown with in all our years of travel!

Broken seats, lights that didn't work, lousy staff attitude - no call buttons answered - if one could find one that worked! The food was so bad that I bought a meal at Hungry Jacks in Auckland rather that eat it.

And as for being on time - no way - and no explanations or apologies either.

We flew a connecting Madrid London in 2004 and the AA connect was done by "Air Comet Plus".

Was the most frightening flight I've ever been on. Nearly overshot the landing at Gatwick, staff looked like leather gloved staff from a WWII commercial carrier.

High price is easy - not enough capacity ie seats to be filled!

There's not much alternative than direct - unless you consider your time of not a lot of value & you like making connections & sitting in airports - false economy to save $500 going via the US.

And Aerolineas - put it this way - I used to work next to the office of the Argentine consul & none of them would fly home using Aerolineas!!
