Is it cheaper to buy a ticket back to Australia at an overseas port rather tha n a return flight booked in Australia. Case in point- I can book coughet/Sydney in Australia on Jestar Starclass for about $980 including all taxes. If I was in coughett and booked the same flight, is it cheaper? Appreciate anyone's experience in this area.

This really depends on the fares offered for the specific itinerary you want. Many LCC carriers (such as Jetstar) only offer 1-way flights, so it can be beneficial to make multiple 1-way bookings. However, most "legacy' or traditional carriers (like Qantas) do not offer cheap 1-way flights. It is often cheaper to book a return fare rather than multiple 1-ways.

Quite a few AFF'er make use of this.

e.g. MEL-SIN o/w purchased on qantas.com costs from AUD1040, book SIN-MEL on the Qantas.com "Asia" portal is SGD746 (~AUD615). Return fare start at AUD1270 and SGD1170 (~AUD965) respectively.

LCC excluded, some one ways are cheaper overseas but you would not offset any airfare costs if you purchased a one-way departing Australia and a one-way returning to Australia.

Where the advantage comes in is if you know your future travel dates to purchase QF and BA return airfares from SIN or BKK. I have the return portion of a BA WT+ returning to BKK in March. Closer to departure I will book another return from either BKK or SIN returning to Australia end of March and leaving Australia again in August/September. The savings are significant as opposed to purchasing a return ticket from Australia.

This is the overseas airfare. When you input HKT-SYD you should be quoted the airfare in Thai baht. I don't think you will find any significant savings with a travel agent in Thailand.
