Cheap Y/UP runs vanishing?

... All for $2200 including taxes on QF & BA metal. ...

Unfortunately on a LONE4 you will not earn mega SCs for your US sectors....
I don't think Oneworldplus2 is on a LONEx - the $2200 inclusive fare is much less than that of a onewolrd explorer ex Oz.

I think in the context of this thread they are looking for good YUP type value.

I was just looking at YUP fares on AA.com for middle of next year from SFO-ORD-DWT, DTW-DFW-SEA, and then SEA-SFO and worked out at AUD$2235 whereas I did the same trip 12 months ago and it cost AUD$1905. Times are a changing, but I suppose they have to make money.

I also noticed that the Australian site does not allow you to access the advanced booking engine whereas aa.com does.

What sort of SCs do you pick up here? Are they calculated on the total distance travelled or is each leg assessed individually?

Status credit earning (with Qantas) is at the First level (see Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Status Credits) according to the invidual route flown. Use Great Circle Mapper (Great Circle Mapper) for distances.

I'm looking at booking some YUPs in June when I'm in the US for about 2 weeks. I did a few last year that got me to WP and want to see if I can retain it this year (or get close). Is there any list (apart from punching in destinations) that shows the longest distances AA flies in the US? eg: SFO-ORD gets 120 SC in F. These are the sort of runs I assume I'd be looking at (keeping in mind that I would use ORD as a hub to pass through).

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I have a few runs that I've found that are quite good earners but I won't post them here for obvious reasons. I'm happy to share research.

Not necessarily. The runs I've come across typically involve several destiations (at least three) and most of the pairs earn either 90 or 120. HNL-LAX earns 150 and used to be good but, not so much anymore, as far as I know.

Certainly the prices seem to be on the rise. The DFW-LAX/SFO runs(just over 1200 miles so 120 SCs) are quite expensive now.One trick is to do the price + schedule function and look for some indirect routings.Last night I was looking and DFW-TPA was the same price as DFW-MIA-TPA so 150 SCs rather than 90.Still 150 would cost ~ $A1300 on the dates i was looking at(May).

It's basic things like SFO-ORD earning 120 SC's being 1846 miles and "Zone 3", but SFO-DFW-ORD earning 210 SC's for SFO-DFW at 1464 miles (Zone 3) and 120 SC's and DFW-ORD at 802 miles (Zone 2) and 90 SC's.

Both routes cost the same.

As far as pricing goes, that is very dependant upon the Airports being used.

e.g. LAX-//-ORD costs USD1070, ONT-//-ORD costs USD705. ONT is ~100km from LAX, a one-way car hire costs ~USD80 or an inter-airport shuttle ~USD80 giving at least USD300 change (at a cost of up to two or three hours).

Thanks everyone!I've now spent a bit more time with a clearer head and found some beauties!.I assume you can't do a multi-city booking on AA.com and show the Instant Upgrade fares can you? I haven't been able to do this in the same way you can by selecting Price and Schedule.

Thanks everyone!I've now spent a bit more time with a clearer head and found some beauties! They also involve some exotic locations I can visit for a bit of beach time.I assume you can't do a multi-city booking on AA.com and show the Instant Upgrade fares can you? Do you want to spill the beans on the location.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

To do this see this 2yo post (little has changed): The Australian Frequent Flyer Online Community - View Single Post - Good SC earning value ex HNL travelling AA First.

  • Go to AA.com.
  • Select "Multi-City" for better option selection.
  • Select "(•) Price" Radio Button.
  • Choose to display 50 flights. Do not select "( ) Schedule".
  • Select "(•) First/Premium: With Restrictions" under "What Is Your Cabin Service Preference?".

When flights are displayed look for the 3+ Segments options offered. You may have to vary selections to get 3+ sector routings.

Be aware that YUP generally book in into P class on AA flights and if you need to change flights for any reason and P class is not available on the a flight you change to, you travel in coach with QF discount WHY SC earn.

When doing SC runs in the past I have always aimed for distances that just cross a sector so that you get max SCs for minimum time in the seat.

eg
BWI-DFW is just over 1200
DCA-DFW is just under

Happy wandering

Never particularly thought I would be in the market for one of these but things change!

Sitting at 850 SC right now with 230 to come for my trip to SIN (Full Y WLG-SYD-PER-SIN-SYD-WLG) which will leave me at 1080 SC and my membership year ends February

So, found a TPA-DFW-SMF-DFW-TPA turnaround, i.e 420 SC for 760:50 AUD AI ($1.80/SC) and thought it was too good to pass up

Of course I do wonder what benefit Plat will be to me personally as QF have all but abandoned NZ!

I guess you fly enough in/to/from OZ to make it worthwhile.

You'd not look a Koru Lounge in the same way after using the MEL/SYD Flounges.

I'm often faced with a choice:
  • Book the 6:00pm MEL-AKL and use the QF F/L up the top or
  • Book the 6:30pm MEL-AKL and use the NZ K/C Bach on the ground ...
;)

Maybe have a look at upgrading to J for the full Y trip, are you sure its full Y?

Yes it's full Y (fare basis YHFFNZ). From NZ the fares to SIN are relatively bunched up with the cheapest only being 400 NZD less than full Y whereas J becomes expensive. I've waitlisted for upgrades to J

Best status run deals, for me, from WLG, are PE fares to Asia where the transtasman segments are ticketed in I so full J status credits. On special can get these for just over 2000 NZD. Did one of these to HKG for NYE for 280 SC's (still not nearly as good as YUP fares in the US)

Nice $/SC MR
