Hi all,
Need to pick the brains trust. I need to go to Vancouver for a week in October for work. Work pays for flights, and I have the option to have a week of annual leave before coming back.
I’m allowed to book the flights myself, and get reimbursed. They don’t have to be return flights from Vancouver, can fly back from any other destination, but total value can only be cost of a return flight to Vancouver (it comes out of a separate work fund I accumulate each year for education & training. I am allowed business but as wife is coming on own budget, we’ll be going economy and saving my $$ for other trips i’ll Go by myself and go business). We have to pay for any extra flights/detour during the extra week of leave, and so i’m Interested in cheap flights.
So wife and I are looking for a cheap tropical detour on the way back for a very lazy week spent by the beach, reading books and not doing much. We’ve both travelled Canada extensively so not interested in staying there after the Vancouver section.
With such an endless list of possibilities to detour to on way back it’s hard to choose, so thought i’d Ask for suggestions from the experts here.
Options in my mind are:
1. Find a cheap flight to a Caribbean location, then fly home from there via LA
2. Fly home via Hawaii
3. Find an airline flying home via a pacific Island e.g Fiji and work it out somehow so it’s just a 1 week stopover and doesnt cost is extra. Are there any other pacific islands that connect through to LA/Canada we could use as a prolonged stopover?
We’re mainly after somewhere quiet, with a nice but reasonably priced resort, white sandy beaches and warm weather and warm ocean to swim in.
We’ve never been to Caribbean, Mexico or Hawaii, and flights to these places are pretty cheap. But whilst some photos look great I do worry about it feeling to American... something I’d rather avoid. I’d probably rather a hut in Fiji over an American resort in Caribbean.
Does anyone have any tips for cheap stopover destinations between Aus and LA/Canada? Any alternatives to Fiji? Any tips on how to book it cheaply so it counts only as a stopover and not 2 separate flights each way which when I search it seems to do and increases the cost.
Thanks for any and all advice! Where would you go for a week after Vancouver for a island getaway??
