I'm off to LA for a few days in April and think I'll go for a hire car. Problem is, still falling just under 25, rental in the states can be a little pricey (especially given I want full insurance).

I've got the Earth Gold insurance, however from previous attempts I'm pretty sure that coverage is next to useless on rental cars in the states.

Can anyone recommend a company at LAX which has a pretty decent fully inclusive rate, however doesn't rape quite as bad as the big companies when it comes to under 25 rentals.

In regards to the insurance, if I select all the options available, does this eliminate any excess charges?

try www.supercheapcar.com: they're on Century Blvd near LAX (and also near SFO and Orange County's John Wayne Airport). they rent a small fleet of Corrolla Nissan Sentra and PT Cruisers to 20+ year olds.

Their price, they say, includes insurance ($400 excess) for you, your rental car, the other car and the other 3rd parties involved.

I've reserved for late March a Corolla for $600'ish US for a fortnight including insurance.

Keep in mind your credit card insurance should insure the $400 excess.

google the road laws in California too, or rely on the laws of physics by renting a big yank tank with bull bars.

ps don't forget some roads (including a few 2 hrs out from LA) can close or be hazardous due to snow/ice (and 8' fell last week in parts of Nth Cal). One might need to buy tire chains at a servo for about $45.
