Just got an email (as you all probably did) offering the following:

SYD-NRT for $899

SYD-HND for $1149

I was surprised at how much more expensive the Haneda flight is over Narita. You could pay for plenty of taxis with the difference.

However when I clicked on the link the lowest SYD-NRT price was $1088.

When I clicked on the Haneda link it just went to a list of fares with no mention of Haneda that I could see. I'm guessing that wasn't a QF fare? DO QF even fly to Haneda?

Does make me wonder what the point of the email was.

Yes QF are flying to Haneda, using a 747.

I saw that - but noticed in the small print of the email that SYD-NRT flights were via BNE.

QF's SYD to Narita flights switch to Haneda on 1 August on a 747. At the same time, QF launches a new BNE-Narita service on an A330.

I'd assume the price difference reflects the premium of a direct Haneda flight and the extra travel time for flying SYD-BNE-NRT.

Did you search for a period during the applicable dates? When I search there are plenty of days with $899 Narita fares, as well as $1149 Haneda fares?

Qantas have said that they would be charging a small premium on their flights to HND. The flights to Haneda are direct from Sydney, on a Boeing 747 and both overnight (which some will regard as a positive), as well of course as Haneda being a much more convenient airport for getting to downtown Tokyo.

Likewise, they have said that they would charge a lower fare to NRT to remain competitive but the downside here for Sydneysiders is that the flight is via BNE and on an A330.

$899.00 Rtn to NRT is great value, although as it has been pointed out is a lot further from the CBD than what HND is.

Hopefully, MEL get's a direct QF service to Japan sometime soon, That would be awesome!

I was under the impression taxis cost a bomb between downtown and NRT so not sure the quote in OP is so accurate.

Isn't there an efficient train service between NRT and downtown Tokyo anyway?

Try buying this on statravel.com.au using the code QF100 and you will get it for $733.11 return ex BNE.

I just got two for the ski (and status run!) season in January 16!

The code is valid until 31 May. Many dates available. You can also use this code for ANY return Qantas international flight (except NZ).

You don't have to be a student and anybody can use it.

If you are buying for 2 or more pax you will need to separate the booking as you only get $100 off for the whole booking.

There is a small $13 credit card fee but worth the $116 saving. There is no debit card fee for all those wanting to save!

Sounds like a steal of a deal !

There are a total of 4 train options on 2 companies, an express and a commuter on each.

I just tried looking for flights to TYO ex CBR in Sep. Both HND (via SYD) and NRT (via BNE) were giving the same price.

I prefer the Kesei Skyliner, you can get that from NRT to Ueno really easily, and think pick up a Shink to wherever. www.hyperdia.com makes it all so simple to work out. Gotta love Japan!

One positive is the extra 20SCs for flying via BNE ;)

The Skyliner is also cheaper and faster to Ueno then the NEX is to Tokyo. (Though changing trains at Nippori is easier then at Ueno)
