Changing a Classic Reward booking (three legs) - risk it?

I've booked a Classic Reward trip CPH>DOH, DOH>CMB, CMB>SYD. At the time, DOH>CMB wasn't available, so I booked a paid ticket with QR (separate PNR).

A Classic Reward flight is now available for DOH>CMB, so I could get a refund on my paid ticket and use points to book a Reward ticket, thus having one Rewards trip under the one PNR.

Given the challenges of QF call centres and the real risk of legs 1 and 3 being cancelled in error, do I risk it, given I would need to call to book the ticket as it's not bookable online...?

Are you intending to stop over in Doha or just transit?

If transit, you may not be able to add the DOH-CMB leg anyway due to married segments (assuming its on QR).

If stopping over, I don't see the benefit of adding it to your existing PNR since there is no savings in the points cost. Just book it under a new PNR.

As for Colombo, if stopping over then I don't see the benefit of having a single PNR. If transitting then a single PNR will protect against missed connections however there is no cost savings because Qantas charges two one way trips anyway if you are transferring between two partner airlines (assuming the DOH-CMB leg is on QR).

That's what I was thinking. Perhaps I buy the middle leg with points, then see if I can merge into the CPH>DOH booking, then I'm on QR with one PNR (just in case).

@aikman legs 1 and 2 are QR, leg 3 is UL. Apart from a few hours in the lounges, the trip will be done in one go.

You can't merge PNRs.

I would attempt to get it all on the one PNR — way too much risk of misconnection with short transits on separate PNRs.

But I would be super vigilant in making sure it gets ticketed. As in, prepare to call repeatedly until it gets done.

Thanks for that. Newbie question - I had one booking that wasn't ticketed and I could see that I wasn't able to Amend/Cancel in Manage Booking on QF site, is that the way to check if it's been ticketed?

A ticketed booking is one where you've received an ETicket (the PDF with a ticket number towards the top) from Qantas.

The easy way to check an existing booking is to download the app called CheckMyTrip. Put in your trip details and it should show a number next to each leg of the flight in the E-ticket field (under passenger information). If it shows '-' next to E-ticket for one of the legs, it hasn't been ticketed.
