Changi - different types of boarding passes for transit?

I'm trying to assist my elderly father with some steps to take during his transit in Singapore next month. He is transiting in Singapore for 23 hours and will leave the airport during this time.

I did the same thing earlier in the year however the boarding pass I was supplied with in Melbourne did not work when I tried to re-enter the airside part of the terminal because, I was told, it was not the right kind of boarding pass. I was then sent to the early check-in counter in the Jewel (NOT sign posted - took me forever to find it) where I was presented with a different kind of boarding pass.

To help my father avoid the same running around (which will really confuse him), can anyone tell me if passengers are able to present to a transfer desk airside before going landside and request this "leaving the terminal" type boarding pass? Or must he go to a check-in desk to update his MEL issued boarding pass?

Absolutely. Need to go to the right transfer desk servicing the departing carrier.

I’m not aware of any special boarding pass that you mention.

It really depends on the transit and the airlines involved.

If you’re swapping airlines, and the onward boarding pass was issued by the initial carrier, it doesn’t hurt to go to check-in for the continuing carrier to see if you need a new boarding pass.

But plenty of times I’ve left the transit area holding an SQ boarding pass for an onward flight, and there’s no issue using that boarding pass to re-enter.

I did wonder if it was a new thing because the last time I was in transit in Singapore (flying SQ) and left the the airport was in 2021 and certainly didn't need a different boarding pass then. The only difference this time was that yes, I was on a OWA and changed carriers.

Sometimes one airline can through check you, and issue boarding passes for subsequent carriers, but in reality the subsequent carrier wants to reissue their own boarding pass.

Flew earlier this year with Virgin to perth connecting with air mauritius. a virgin issued through boarding passes, but at perth we dropped by the MK check-in counter and they took the VA issued passes and gave us MK ones.

Same with our transit at LGW… MK issued passes for TAP, but TAP gave us new ones.

Doesn’t hurt to recheck with the onward airline.
