Re: ODU - Jetstar Starclass

I've done a ODU couple of times. In Syd aiport just approached the check-in and asked up front if I could upgrade. Checked-in and was then sent to service desk to pay and have ticket re-issued. It was a similar process in KL.

In Ho Chi Minh, was sent to starclass counter, then told to go to service desk, then sent back to starclass counter. They didn't seem used to ODU.

It cost $300 each time, and this could be paid in CC or Cash.

Oh and previously reported that points were not awarded - however sent an email asking why they weren't issued and was replied to with an adjustment on my account. SCs and points turned up on account. Just keep your boarding passes as proof.

Also - just because only a few seats are showing up as allocated in the seat booking drive when you make a dummy booking - be aware that sometimes people buy a ticket and don't allocate their seat until they get to the airport. So while only a few seats are taken when you do an online booking in starclass, some seats might be sold but not allocated yet. However my experience has been very empty *class. So I'm sure as long as you get to check-in early you will get a ODU.

Re: ODU - Jetstar Starclass

Travelled SYD-HNL in mid July on a Jetsaver fare. Stood first in line at the service counter in advance of the staff's arrival 3 hours before the flight in SYD INTL terminal. Made payment with CC ($300) at service desk and then queued for check in the Starclass checkin line. Both points and SCs posted a couple of days later without need for follow up.

My traveling companion did an ODU last week HNL-SYD - he first queued in the economy check in line just over 3 hrs before flight and was referred to a service desk for payment. They didn't have a stamp for Starrclass for the boarding pass so we visited SYD departures on arrival back in Australia and sweet talked the local check in agent to add the stamp just in cae points don't post...cost now US$400

Re: ODU - Jetstar Starclass

wondering whether any one has ever asked for a JQ ODU and they said sorry, none available. The last 2 times I have flown * class it has been full. Once in peak and once in off season so interesting, wonder how many were ODU?

Also if you try to book a normal JQ fare it prompts you if you wish to upgrade, which is always th edifference between current fare selected and * class fare. I wonder if that is th eprinciple cost decision for the ODU , your current fare as to what price they offer it to you for as otherwise there is no saving at all.

I've only been declined once when requesting the ODU with JQ and that was SYD-HNL when the plane was full (school holidays). Never a problem on the Asian flights (*Class has been almost empty on most of the runs I've done).

I will purchase a JQ sale fare and then request the ODU - I've gotten some great deals this way (eg SYD-KUL return $1000 total in *Class). I'd never pay full price for a *Class fare, may as well fly QF with a points upgrade. The JQ ODU is good alternative when I know I'll be bottom of the upgrade list on a QF run and JQ are having a sale on similar routes...

I guess it depends on whether you are after the SC bonus you get when flyign * class. All my travel to BKK is for business paid by the company so * class it is, as it is 240SC for a return trip. I prefer not to runt he risk of not getting the upgrade and secondly, it makes expensing tickets harder later as the bean counters woudl ntolike it. We are OK to purchase * class or Y+ but not sure how purchasing jetsaver then ODU would look, even if price is same or cheaper.

Byt he way did you get * class SC from Qantas for the ODU?

Re: ODU - Jetstar Starclass

Ditto to me too.

I've got to go to Japan in November and I'm seriously considering booking a Jetsaver fare to Osaka and trying the ODU idea.

Anyone know what the loads are usually like on this route?

I need to get enough SC's to maintain SG and this would help enormously. It would also save me quite a bit on what QF are charging to Tokyo. I need to go to both Osaka and Tokyo and it doesnt really matter which order so that would suit and QF now dont have direct flights from Melbourne anyway so flying via OOL rather than SYD is no big deal in my book.

Thoughts anyone?

Unless you are really unlucky with a full plane you will have no problems at all getting the ODU.

Just make sure you are one of the first ones lined up at check in. A few times I've arrived 3+ hrs ahead of departure time and there has already been several people queued up in economy - when this has happened I've been a little cheeky and popped into the * class line which is usually empty and requested the ODU from the * class counter with no problems.

Re: ODU - Jetstar Starclass

I know my next JQ flight is ages away, being JQ3 25/11/08 SYD-HNL, but can everyone reading this thread try not to book onto this flight so I may have a crack at a paid upgrade! ;):D

Re: ODU - Jetstar Starclass

The two SYD-HNL flights I have been on with JQ have been heavily booked so make sure you are first in line as there may only be 1 or 2 * class seats available.

In contrast the several Asian JQ flights I've travelled on have been at most 50% full with * class virtually empty.

Re: ODU - Jetstar Starclass

A bit primitive but I just completed a dummy booking for 32 x starclass seats for 25/11/08 SYD-HNL and it was available. I then tried 33 starclass seats but it said sold-out.

So there are 32 available starclass seats at this stage - out of a total of 38 starclass seats.

Re: ODU - Jetstar Starclass

Aloha...

Currently sitting in Premier Club lounge at HNL awaiting my HA flight to LAS in a few hours time.

Flew from SYD on JQ3 Thursday night and got the ODU I wanted... Following are some observations and details of a lengthy conversation with the CSM on duty for the JQ checkins.

Arrived at SYD T1 at 2.20pm, over 3.5hrs before check-in and there was close to 30 people already lined up.... after doing a scout around, most, actually all of them looked like holiday makers and prob not in the know about ODU's or not really in a situation to pay for an upgrade as they were mostly family groups of 4+.

I checked with the ticketing desk/CSM and she said ODU's were available, and they were now $400... Yeouch...

Anyways, to cut a long story short, the CSM said that ODU's had increased from $250 to $300 about 6-9 months ago, then up to $350 a few months back... only in the past few weeks have they been told $400 and no less.

Apparently the frequency of being asked for an ODU is daily now on most JQ international sectors.

The CSM didnt think there would be any more rises in the cost of these in the near future, however the more people that ask for them will dictate any price increases.

I will add to this more later in a trip report, going to sit back and enjoy some chill out time in the HA lounge...

btw, paying the $400 for 2A was well worth it.... and even though economy was pretty much full, the CSM locked out the seat I was originally assigned so the minister of war and finance had one of only a handfull of empty seats next to her... Win/Win IMO

If people continue to book cheap airfares, try to get ODU to * Class and post their experiences on public forums then I would expect the ODU to * Class to cost a lot more in the future.

Just look at what has happened to domestic * Class in the last few months....

Re: ODU - Jetstar Starclass

I think once the costs is anything higher than $400 it will rule ME out from applying for an ODU, because I won't see the value from the $400+.

Yes you get FFmiles & SCs but when travelling in pairs the cost of more than $800 for an ODU can pay for 2-3 nights at a Waikiki beachfront hotel ;) plus many varieties of cheescakes from The Cheesecake Factory.
