Say you book a Y flexi fare and put in a J upgrade request. The upgrade request comes through. You then need to change your flight. What happens with the J upgrade? Do you rebook in Y and get your upgrade points refunded?

I gave QF a call to find the answer.

If the upgrade has come through:

If you change your flight more than 24 hours prior to departure you can cancel the upgrade at a cost of 5,000 points. If less than 24 hours prior to departure you get nothing back.

However, if your new flight has an upgrade available you *might* not lose the points to cancel, but must be done over the phone and then you incur the phone service fee.

All in all, seems a pretty poor and grey area to me.

One nice perk of being a VA WP is you can cancel J upgrades for free (points and comp) when more than 24 hours from departure on any Y fare.
