A little observation/question:

Flew CFS-SYD-MEL on Monday after a nice Easter break in the (relative) warmth of the mid north coast. The flight CFS-SYD (VA 1164) was on an E 190 aircraft, shorthand E90 in the booking engine.

These planes have a 1-2 J configuration but if you're booking CFS-SYD as a individual flight, you cannot get a J fare (it only becomes available when booking a connecting flight like CFS-SYD-MEL or such). Why is this?

If it's for the reason I think (no lounge at CFS and presumably no J catering, so really you only get a comfy seat and nothing more) then why then is a J flight from CFS-SYD-MEL around $250 more expensive than just SYD-MEL (if you get nothing extra)?

Also, it seems you can't book CFS-SYD-MEL as a J reward...

Not really griping, just wondering - I almost bought a flexi (was only a few $ more than the only saver fares left) and wonder what wormhole an upgrade to J would land you in...

Why is this?
VA does not offer business class service to/from CFS. Platinum (and possibly gold) Velocity members can usually sit in the J seats - even on a saver lite fare - but they only receive standard VA economy service.

CFS-SYD-MEL costs $250 more than SYD-MEL because you're getting full business class service on the SYD-MEL sector. You're also paying for the better fare rules that come with a J fare.

You would be able to upgrade only the SYD-MEL leg.

Thanks, that all makes sense.

I'd presume then that if you bought the J ticket from CFS-SYD-MEL you would sit in the J seats. Would you get J status credits as well?

The results are interesting - I did a dummy business class booking SYD-CFS-MEL return, allocated myself seats in the J cabin on the Y flights (as well as the J flights) and the fare basis on both legs, as displayed on the payments page, is LZDA.

L is a flexi fare class so taking the fare class at face value, these fares would apparently earn at the full economy rate. That certainly doesn't sound right, but as for what actually happens in practice with these bookings, I'll have to defer to someone who has flown on one.

EDIT: If I don't enter a Velocity number when booking, the usual Velocity seating restrictions apply on all legs, so a non-status member purchasing a business fare out of CFS will be sitting down the back on their first sector.

That's what puzzled me as well - I'm not non-status velocity member so couldn't work out how you would ever get the seats at the front of the E90. Handy to know that you could get them on a normal fare if you are plat (maybe gold).

When you log in as WP and make the booking, the entire cabin opens up for you. J seat with Y service:
