A crucial training exercise to prepare for an emergency at Melbourne airport has been scaled back due to state government cuts, the firefighters' union says.
United Firefighters Union secretary Peter Marshall said the Country Fire Authority would normally send four trucks from Greenvale, Sunbury and Craigieburn to an emergency drill that takes place at the Tullamarine airport at least every two years.
But this year, only one full-time crew and truck from Greenvale and one officer from each of Sunbury and Craigieburn will attend the training exercise on July 31.
"The CFA have cut back on crews attending for budget reasons. It is nonsensical," Mr Marshall said.
