Yep... No Problem. Went to Quay twice in the last fortnight with no notice. Got table 12 and I have no problems with restaurants here in Melbourne.

I am a regular diner at many great restaurants. I don't require a credit card to gain better tables. I just get them anyway.

IIRC... My very first meeting up for drinks with AFF members in Melbourne at Crown.... Myself and +1 walked past one of the more top end restaurants and noticed it was "closed" as they had a visiting chef from The French Laundry in Califonia. "Sold Out" I made a call and we had a window table made available immediately. You would have had no chance getting in by calling Centurian. I believe we paid cash for our meal.

Your tip at the end of the meal will be remembered long after the colour of your credit card.

LOL.... It was more that my +1 has not been to The French Laundry but I have and I wanted him to try the food.

It's NEVER about ego with me... I'm just not that type of guy. DTE & GSOH sums it up.

Those are all reasonable points (except having a go at Hayden only being a supp...I don’t think it should matter who the main bread winner is in the relationship).

So, just to be clear, are you saying that they know you at Quay and at a “top end” restaurant at Crown (not that most of those restaurants are worth making a fuss over, but that’s for another post)? So you call, speak to the restaurant manager and ask her (for it is a she at the Quay group) for a table and, because she recognises your name, she bumps someone else for you? If that’s what you’re saying then I congratulate you - you definitely can’t get that with a Centurion card to the best of my knowledge.

However I can tell a similar story in favour of Centurion. A month ago we were visiting Melbourne and at the last minute some foodie friends suggested we go to Vue de Monde. My friend is a bit of a big wig at one of the banks, does some part time sommelier work to keep his weekend wine making interest up, etc, so he knows people around town. He said “You’ll never get a table at Vue at this short notice.” I agreed he was probably right but rang Centurion anyway. The Centurion table was still sitting there, ready for someone to take it, and so we did. It doesn’t matter whether it’s New York, San Francisco or Sydney, the Centurion table (or tables - some places have several) are a great feature in my opinion. Now if I knew someone senior at every great restaurant in every major city then maybe I wouldn’t use this card benefit...

But on track, I think that the exclusivity is the main key ingredient with the centurion. Whilst I have always thought myself to be quite fortunate to be in the possession of one, I have seen quite a few floating around on the retail scene therefore the "exclusive" feel to it is wearing thin. For example, last week I was behind a woman at the hairdressers who was paying with one. This week, a guy saw me holding my card at North Sydney IGA and he had a chat with me - the woman behind the counter said that she sees them all the time!

Nevertheless, it's still good to own one.

I never knew anyone prior to my first visit at Quay. I flew to Sydney for the day and had lunch there and really enjoyed it. I chose the degustation menu... Ordered some excellent wine and tipped very very well. Upon leaving the restaurant I was given a business card and a mobile number to call should I wish to make another reservation. I took advantage of that for my next visit.

I’ve tipped at Quay but never over about 15%. I don’t like tipping in Oz because, unlike the US, a waiter at Quay or Est is on at least $60K (or so I am told) - they aren’t working for tips. However if something is sensational then I’ll be generous, otherwise it’s just a round-up or a smallish tip.

So anyway, that’s a handy little number to have :). Do you know for certain that you were able to get a table when none was available, at Quay, or do you just suspect that this was the case?

First post here.

I have just received an invitation to recieve an amex centurion card. I currently have the platinum charge card. Is it worth the extra $3400 above the $900 charge card annual fee? I use the concierge service regularly, and the customer service team seem to be the same. The girl I spoke to when I called the centurion number, is one I have spoken to several times calling the charge card number. I was hoping for additional benefits above and beyond the charge card. SPG program is still only gold on centurion, which is suprising to me.

SOOOO... could any centurion card holders enlighten me as to REAL tangible benefits above the platinum charge card ?

Hi I held the Centurion card for 5 yrs and yes its an amazing ego boost to be invited but the benefits that I used where all available on Platinum at 25%less annual fee. Australians are not very impressed by it ...but in the States people understand it is invite only. If you have a great Personal Assistant then the concierge is will not be of interest. Although the same staff operate the Platinum Concierge . I use this service several times a week and had built up great relationships with several key staff. Unless you demand they fob you offer and do not go the extra mile for you.
The Frequent Flyer points where 1.5 same as Platinum.
The Travel department is average and I would never use them. The original Centurion offered Platinum SPG...My advice stick with the Platinum !
 
Well I'm not 100% positive... However... I was told that Saturday Night was booked out til late in the year but I got table 12 with 1 day's notice. (That's the 1 in the glassed circle area straight ahead as you enter it near the window.)

I confess I tipped a lot more than 15% but that is my way. I really appreciate great food and service and am prepared to pay accordingly.

As for Crown.... I have been dining at the restaurants there for over 10 years. I was invited to pretty much all the openings and as I am a creature of habit I tend to dine there a lot. About 5 years ago I was give complimentary valet parking for life due to my spending pattern. We had my +1's birthday at Number 8 last year and the bill was horriffic.... But I guess that's why I can get a table any time at any of the Crown restaurants. Like when I fly... I am always VERY polite and respectful of the service staff so yeah I know someone.... But that has been earned over many many years of loyalty.

I would have thought that 5 years ago when I received it I had spent over $250k at Crown on F & B. (I don't gamble at all)

i could not agree more.
as my 4th centurion anniversary approaches (read: 4th time $4300 annual fee) i'm once again really struggling to justify its value. without a doubt, it is the best wallet jewellery you can wear, but objectively, there is little that i find that compensates for its egregious fee. here in australia the centurion annual fee is amongst the highest of any country in the world and our benefits are embarrassing compared to those that other countries' centurion members receive. after reading some of the glowing reviews from other centurion members here i wonder if i'm either crazy or walking around with a "kick me amex" sign on my back that i don't know about.

i routinely wait on hold when i call to cardmember services, the concierge or the travel service--often for extended periods; the last time i used the travel service (for a last minute hertz car rental reservation) i was quoted over 3x the price that i ended up with by double checking directly with the car rental website; i've given up trying to have them find good deals on biz and 1st class airfares despite all the fare guarantee noise that they recently sent us in the mail; claiming on the baggage delay insurance has always proved a hassle with the number of original receipts, original boarding passes and proof of delays required since they changed insurance providers; trying to get a table at aria was impossible last time i tried to book a last minute dinner reservation; my request to the "exceptional" concierge service for help finding an out-of-stock hermes wallet was rewarded two days later with an email reply stating that "the sydney store is out of stock" and perhaps i could "try looking on ebay" (i called hermes in paris directly and they referred me to a store that had it in a matter of minutes); we've lost the one elevated ff membership level we used to get (but how useful was mh gold anyway); gotta love that complementary priority club platinum membership for all the holiday inn stays we do; priority pass and spg gold come with the platinum card at less than 1/4 the centurion fee; i presume that most of us are frequent enough travellers to find the qf club membership of specious value; we get a silly website riddled with broken links, things that don't exist (i.e. centurion diaries) and outdated offers and terms and conditions (although they did finally update the "valid through december 31, 2008" displayed on the centurion partner hotel benefits page last month); i have had terrible luck hearing back from people when they promise to "get back to me".

to centurion's credit, i find the one free night at each of the mo properties each year to be a great benefit. and the new hilton diamond level is a welcome improvement but doesn't replace the guaranteed late check-out of spg platinum.

i wish i had more positive to say about my experiences with the centurion card. i truly wanted it and *really* tried to like it when i first received it. but over time the regular disappointments, constant diminution of benefits and poor levels of service have taken their toll on me. if amex didn't brag about their "unparalleled" levels of service and "exceptional value" that the centurion card provides (quoting directly from pierric beckert), perhaps i would find it easier to accept the spotty service and thread-bare benefits that the australian centurion card provides.

to me, the australian centurion card represents a cruel parody of expectation set against what it actually delivers.

if it weren't for $100,000 worth of grief i'd get from my +1 for downgrading to platinum (who loves the attention the titanium card occasionally draws), the decision of what i should do the next time the $4300 fee is due would be a no-brainer.
 
We spend more than 2 million a year on Amex Ultimate and I could not even justify being Platinum let alone the Centurion.
We have Chubb travel insurance at work and the other benefits are mainly hand holding stuff that would suit only those folks who want/need high end perks or would have wanted to be a celebrity in another life.
A lot of us are not wanting to say DYKWIA but rather remain out of the limelight.
The saving from not being a Centurion could get your partner something very nice in the way of a present.

If the concierge service could stop the rain when I am walking that would really impress me.
As far as a steakhouse chain goes it is a toss up between Flemings and Mortons in the US and unfortunately Rockpool is not as good even though their pricing would imply they should be better.

I don’t find that is the case. As bossreggie mentioned, above, Quay is booked out on Saturday nights for much of the rest of the year. The three hatters can be very difficult to get into on a Friday or a Saturday night. Aria is nowhere near as difficult to get into because it’s not as in demand (it’s not a three-hatter, it’s not at the standard of the others, etc) and the rest of those restaurants over at East Circular Quay are just tourist spots so not in the same league. I think booking ahead tends to happen when you visit a city (eg I always book ahead when visiting Melbourne) but when you live in a city and you routinely (eg weekly) eat out at the top restaurants then some people seem to rely on a concierge to get a table. At least that has been my experience.

They really aren't quite that exclusive - going back a few years now, but I used to play the hospitality game and have worked in a few reasonably-nice-but-not-5-star restos - I used to see a Centurion card once every few weeks I guess. I have to say, the majority of the Centurion cardholders were complete cough; poor attitude toward staff/other diners and under-par tipping (as compared to other AmEx cardholders generally) was a fairly common thing. More than once I had said cardholder make some comment like "I bet you haven't seen one of those before" whilst paying. I mean, really? :rolleyes:

That's not to say that all Centurion cardholders are like that (and nor would I expect anything of the sort from anyone on AFF :!:), but it seemed to me that it was more common than with other card types.
