Flew to Perth on Friday night (working over here this week and thought I would travel early). Apart from the 2 hour delay due to the Sydney storm, I was disappointed that we didn't have the seat back entertainment. I thought all CBR - PER had it. Apparently it is not on all flights.

I come back Wed afternoon 15.35 Departure. Does anyone know if this plane will have it?

I flew CBR-SYD-PER-PHE last week and the A330 from SYD did have seat back screens, also the 738 from Perth to PH as well. On the way back via ADL only the ADL-CBR leg (the direct 7pm flight) did not have screens. I think on shorter legs it is still a bit of a lottery as to what plane you end up with. Have been on BNE-CBR different times with sometimes entertainment and sometimes not. It's one of life's great mysteries

What QF advertise is entertainment on all flights. That doesn't mean personal IFE as main screen still counts as entertainment.
Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't most of the direct flights between these two cities are on 737's?
It is impossible to tell prior to the flight as the seat map for each of the 738's is the same (12J156Y).
Essentially it's about a 5050 chance of getting personal IFE on a 738.

The CBR-PER flight is indeed operated by a Boeing 738, so it's definitely a hit and miss situation with PTVs.

Qantas usually use the 737s with AVOD on the CBR-PER flights, but not always. I'd say you just got unlucky and although I cannot guarantee you will get a plane with personal entertainment on the return, I'd be willing to bet that you will.

VXP was the beastie, and no, it does not have PIFE.

All 73H's from VH-VZL have seat back PIFE.

18 of the 115 operations between PER and CBR since October 1 have not had seat back PIFE, so fersea was rather stiff at 6/1 odds. (Although I suspect the SYD storms had something to do with it.)

This is always subject to change but your current scheduled QF718 indeed has seat back IFE.

I always fly either SYD or MEL when doing CBR-PER runs since

1. CBR-PER runs are always 737's :(
2. AVOD is hit and miss.
3. Why fly direct when you can connect

So how many of the domestic 738s have AVOD now?
QFlyer hasn't been updated in a long time - is there an up to date list somewhere?

Qantas recently began operations with their 23rd AVOD equipped 73H (VH-XZJ).

This thread gives a clue:
You can see what they've used each day QF790 / QFA790 Live flight info - Flightradar24

I don't have a list to hand of which are BSI and which aren't BSI but have AVOD, but a few posts on the net suggest VZL VZM VZO VZP VZR VZS have AVOD, and from VZT onwards to VZZ, and then XZA onwards are BSI with AVOD. You basically have a 16 in 54 chance of scoring one.
...
VH-XZJ began service 15th November, VH-XZK's entry into service is imminent.

So, currently that leaves the 21 VXA-VXU, 12 VYA-VYL & 5 VZA-VZE totalling 38 without AVOD and the 13 VZL-VZM,VZO-VZP,VZR-VZZ & 10 XZA-XZJ totalling 23 (soon to be 24) with AVOD.

I believe it's 23 not including the ZK birds.
The qantas source is much better than qlfyer currently.

This is the biggest problem with Qantas... inconsistency of product. This is why I don't book 747 flights, but if they were all refubs it wouldn't be an issue.

Both main domestic carriers have the same issue (330's, aren't there still 737's with LTA out there or is the product gone the way of the dodo?)

Whilst Qantas may well have inconsistency of product with various planes, I do think it unfair to criticise them regarding their 737 fleet.
Their older 737's are being replaced by newer planes. The old planes don't have seat back flight entertainment, the new ones do.
Would people prefer Qantas didn't buy new planes with seat back entertainment just to maintain consistency? No.

Return flight tonight once again didn't have seat back entertainment. I find it does make a difference to the enjoyment of the flight.

Absolutely it does.

I find it a little strange that QF can't make sure the longer flights are using the next gen 73H's...

I got them all the time on Syd-HBA, for some reason but I'd much prefer them on the longer routes.

Do any of the AV geeks know why QF wouldn't keep them permanent on longer routes?

Wow, you must have been really unlucky.

I have calculated the probability of getting a non-AVOD bird on BOTH the outbound and return flights CBR-PER as 1.6% based on the past month of aircraft used.

I guess that answers my question - looks like they are prioritizing the longer routes.

My guess is that it is to maintain a consistent amount of cycles and hours across the fleet.

I suppose they do try give priority to newer aircraft on the longer routes, e.g. CBR-PER, trans-tasman, SYD-DRW, SYD-NOU etc. as is mostly the case if you have a look, but every now and again it mustn't be possible due to scheduling problems, maintenance, aircraft substitutions etc. etc.
