CBR AP wants to increase freight flights

Overnight freight out of Canberra Airport will relieve Sydney residents of noise and free up land, allowing Sydney to expand commercial passenger services, according to a draft master plan.

Setting out Canberra Airport’s development for the next 20 years, the 2014 draft master plan, on public exhibition until June, says most Canberrans will be spared noise from overnight freight aircraft.


The exceptions are some homes at Jerrabomberra and the new Tralee suburb, which are outside noise abatement areas.

Would probably affect freight services to SYD and maybe even free up slots for passenger flights.

Hopefully the residents of Tralee don't start whinging about the noise after they were properly warned about it. But they will.

AFAIK, the first round of residents have signed something stating "we know the airport was there first, we won't complain". It'll be the second round of residents who make a fuss...
How insane, building a suburb directly under a flight path of a busy (by regional standards) airport...

The thing I would love to know is if they can convince any airline to commence direct international services, and more to the point would any Canberran actually use said service? Even with direct DRW and PER services, I know quite a few people who will still transit via SYD or MEL for either frequency or better A/C... I can't imagine that direct flights would be popular without it been serviced by a similar quality of aircraft as what you'd get from SYD / MEL...

Sounds good superficially - but factor in the 3hr drive to syd, and the added cost to the freight company, then landing fees are going to need to be quite cheap to make it economic......

Assuming the freight is going to SYD, lots of places in NSW which are closer to CBR than SYD... Plus nothing to say that they can't use extra capacity at CBR to bring more freighters here, and the freight which is destined for SYD could be put on one of the 30 or so flights between CBR and SYD per day, assuming it wasn't directly flown there in the first place. It'd make more efficient use of their landing slots.

True (but then why wouldn't they be using CBR now instead of syd in that case).

I expect a combination of lack of customs clearance (the AQIS "shed" is pretty small there), lack of any real freight handling facilities, and lack of interest by the airlines themselves...
I see it as (surprisingly) forward planning for when SYD hits capacity...

The high speed rail that Mr Snow keeps talking about (which he wants to go via the airport) is meant to be part of the "master" master plan and a solution for getting SYD based freight via CBR...
