Cathay Pacific Using AA miles

Really? That's strange. Normally November should have plenty of availability SYD - HKG in CX J, especially this far out. I just snagged a seat for Tuesday on that route yesterday using QF points.
I can travel Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday and there was no availability when I called last week.

I was told to keep calling back closer to time. I cannot afford to wait that long.

Hmmm that's interesting. Could be a by product of a large influx of USDM redemptions. Still, CX generally release extra award seats closer to the day. Mind you, if you can't wait, perhaps TG F to BKK on LM ;)

Is it by any chance in late Nov when the Uni semester finishes (and Uni holidays)?

Very funny.

I will see you there when hell freezes over and I will shout you a free trip in First.
Didn't you hear, hell froze over today! What's that, where's hell? Well, I'll tell you, it's somewhere frozen...

I have been trying to get business flights SYD/BNE-BKK/HKG in November on CX using AA miles and there is no availability. Can get economy flights on the dates I want but didn't want to waste the AA miles on an economy redemption.

Glad to see you taking a fresh approach !
I recall when you hit 1m QFF points your plan was seven 140k Y trips lol

Why not burn your QF points before they drum up anymore surcharge types

That is still the plan with the QFF points but I may not get the chance.

Plenty of AA miles and Amex MR points to burn for travel to/from Asia. That is what happens when you hoarde miles/points for a rainy day.

changes are free with AA provided the origin and destination stay the same :) so if CX opens up you should be ok to change.

I am in hospital in Amsterdam recovering from a hip replacement after a fall here (thats another story) and need to get home to BNE asap. I called the AA US number and a very helpful agent got me 2 seats J class in 2 days time may 19th on BA to LHR connecting with CX to HKG and on to BNE. I was really happy with this but then we had the Aussie CC problem... She tried everything but to no avail and told me I needed to call the Australian number in sydney 0291011948 to get it ticketed. (this is the new number apparently). I called and after explaining everything she got it together and quoted me a lower price than the US agent. She processed CC no problem but then said their is a additional charge for something (i couldnt understand her and the pain meds were kicking in) so i just said fine, do it. Anyway I got the email confirmation and it is ticketed and the taxes/fees total A$180 per person. I will wait and see if anything else appears on my CC statement. Just want to get home now!

supposed to be a booking fee for processing in Australia. different fees apply in different countries (used to be $60 or something in australia compared to just GBP5 if you went through the UK office).

not sure what the charges are now though.

Thanks.

I think I will stick with what I have got. The QF 747 is my favourite and what better way to travel than 16K upper deck. The 747's may not be around too much longer so try to fly them where possible. I could easily do it in economy bulkhead as well.

Sorry but a quick question, how far in advance can you book cx with aa points? because CX is way ahead of AA online (although you cant book online for CX). Would it be any different if i called? And the availability i can see on QF, would that be accessible exactly when calling AA?

Thanks for your advice!

No, it's the AA rules for award booking that are followed ie 331 days out. No difference if calling.
The availability should be the same as what you can see on QF.

Not quite the same in some cases. I find JAL website is the most accurate ...

Guys there was plenty of CX F availability for two pax on the HKG-JFK route in March 2015 back in April. Now there is hardly any. Does CX open up any more seats say six months before or am I going to have to wait until the month before or T-3 days etc ?

Thanks

They are known to open up availability closer to departure (if there are unsold seats) but as for when exactly that is, no one knows... good luck!

Cathay availability is disgracefully erratic: coming and going all over the place. JL shows the most accurate for USDM and AA. QF seems to have a lot more than they do. I'd set an ExpertFlyer availability alert for the flight you want and jump on it when availability pops up.
