Postage out of Japan is expensive, whether Fedex or EMS.
If you can, ship from HK, which is so much cheaper
Sorry for being off-topic, but I thought it would be handy to share some tips regarding a cheap (but slow) method of shipping stuff from HK.
- If you have excess luggage which you don't need urgently on arrival, Hongkong Post offers a surface mail option at a very reasonable price
-
Postage calculator (select "Small Packet"): E.g. It costs HK$45.6 to send a 1 kg package to Zone 2 destinations (e.g. Australia, Canada, US, UK). Max weight for each package is 2 kg.
- Time required for delivery: 1-2 months
- However, be reminded that surface mail packages must be easily openable for examination. You can use string to secure the packaging, but not tape or glue. I've done this many times and the contents always arrive safely.
- Go to your nearest post office. The staff at the manned counters will weigh your package and tell you the postage cost. Fill in a green customs declaration form (CN 22) and affix it to your package.
- For those checking in at Hong Kong Station, the General Post Office (accessible via the footbridge from IFC) is just a 3 minute walk away.
