Has anyone been successful with a Cathay ODU ($$$ not points)?

I'm considering some flights to Asia next year (mainly MEL-HKG) and the thought of travelling Econ :( at 0.5 points per mile  is really unappealing.

The possibility of a paid ODU would make the overnight flights more palateable.

ODUs in CMB seem pretty standard - at least to BKK or SIN
and the price (US$100) has remained the same for quite a while.
haven't tried any other routes...... as the above two seem to be the ones that have an underpopulated J cabin and a midnight or thereabouts departure time. But the flights are shortish and whether it is worth it would depend on your need for sleep and the nature of the next flight.

Just be careful. ODU's have a habit of not booking you into a higher fare class and hence not earning J points. You simply get assigned a seat at the front of the bus.

Cathay are also having a J sale at the moment for dates early in 2009. They aren't super bargains, but are cheaper than usual prices.

I don't recall ever seeing offers of ODU's on Cathay flights, but I've never asked.

Sorry to dig this up, but just wanted to follow up wandering fred's remarks about ODU's on CX.

We're flying from HKG to ICN tomorrow, and the flight still looks fairly open. Booked an H class fare a while ago, happy to pay for an ODU to J if they're available, and not really concerned about SCs / bonus points.

Having said that, we still haven't reached the OW levels we're aiming for (two more flights!), so in any case even that might be wishful thinking. :)

Urban myth is that you are unlikely to find any joy for ODUs in HKG. Given the current situation - full fare difference might be quoted. But good luck in any case and please let us know the outcome.

Never seen ODU on CX ! But been Op-up'ed rather a lot being OWE. Just luck i guess. CX do not like to discount, they seem to prefer to fly the plane empty.

My experience with CX is paid upgrades are only from a handful of full fare type buckets.

in 2007 a friend paid approx Au$500 for a upgrade to J from Y (full Y) HKG-NRT, that did credit to QF as J.

FWIW spoke to CX who offered only to cancel my current booking a rebook a full fare J ticket, which amongst other things would have been a little impractical. The flight ended up pretty full anyway.
